PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION.

In order to adapt this book to the needs of the schools, it was found necessary to depart from the original plan of making it exclusively a book of principles, and to add in this edition a large number of selections for prolonged courses of drill. The selections are especially adapted to cultivate the conversational, descriptive, narrative, didactic, sermonic, and oratoric styles of address. These will meet the requirements of all except dramatic students. The large proportion of pieces adapted to the simple styles of delivery is in keeping with the theory maintained in the book, that the oratoric is the enlarging and heightening of these simpler styles, and, to be effective, must be built upon them.

It is due the authors to state that in many instances the selections are adapted by leaving out certain parts.

Lists of references to suitable selections in the Bible and Shakespeare have been added for the convenience of students. These selections will be found among the best of these two great classics.

In more advanced stages of drill, especially among professional students, the pupil's own composition should be used.

Numerous corrections have been made in the text.

The author would acknowledge his obligation to Houghton, Mifflin & Co. for permission to use extracts from their copyright edition of Longfellow's poems.
