made known that in his latter days he did his best to render atonement for his deceptions. At all events, we may learn from his life the useful lesson never to give way to despondency while energy and hope offer a field for exertion, which, if properly directed and resolutely persevered in, are certain to be crowned with ultimate success.

On the death of Puss, his grateful master and the King vied with each other in honouring his memory. The marquis employed the first historians to hand down Lord Cat's deeds to posterity, and the King had to content himself with erecting a monument to his memory, and directing that his orphan kittens should be educated in a manner to fit them to emulate his example. How far this was the case my little readers may judge for themselves, when I tell them that the celebrated Whittington's Cat descended in a direct line from the famous PUSS IN BOOTS!
