Thy Works praise Thee.

1 ALL nature shows, in various ways, Her great Creator's praise;

The young birds sing, while on the wing, In soft and pleasant lays.

2 The trees look gay, and seem to say, There is a God above;

The sun's bright beams, the liquid streams, Say we are ruled by love.

3 The bleating flocks, with happy looks,
Say God deigns us to feed;

Without his power, there's not an hour
But we should comforts need.

4 And if the herds, and trees, and birds,
All join to praise God's name,

It must not be that such as we
Neglect to do the same.

[blocks in formation]

1 1 SING the mighty power of God,
That made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad,
And built the lofty skies.

2 I sing the wisdom that ordained
The sun to rule the day;

The moon shines full at his command,
And all the stars obey.

3 I sing the goodness of the Lord,
That filled the earth with food.

He formed the creatures by his word,
And then pronounced them good.

4 There's not a plant or flower below,
But makes thy glories known;
And clouds arise, and tempests blow,
By order from thy throne.

1 ETERNAL Father, God of love,
To thee our hearts we raise;
Thy all-sustaining power we prove,
And gladly sing thy praise.

2 Thine-wholly thine - O let us be!
Our sacrifice receive:

Made, and preserved, and saved by thee,
To thee ourselves we give.

[blocks in formation]

1 HAIL, great Creator — wise and good! To thee our songs we raise;

Nature, through all her various scenes,
Invites us to thy praise.

2 At morning, noon, and evening mild,
Fresh wonders strike our view;
And while we gaze, our hearts exult
With transports ever new.

3 Thy glory beams in every star

Which gilds the gloom of night, And decks the smiling face of morn With rays of cheerful light.

4 The lofty hill, the humble lawn,
With countless beauties shine;
The silent grove, the awful shade,
Proclaim thy power divine.

5 Great nature's God! still may these scenes Our serious hours engage!

Still may our grateful hearts consult
Thy works' instructive page!

6 And while, in all thy wondrous ways,
Thy varied love we see,

87

O, may our hearts, great God, be led
Through all thy works to thee!

1 O God, we praise thee, and confess
That thou the only Lord
And everlasting Father art,
By all the earth adored.

2 To thee all angels cry aloud;
To thee the powers on high,
Both cherubim and seraphim,
Continually do cry, ·

3 "O holy, holy, holy Lord,
Whom heavenly hosts obey,
The world is with the glory filled
Of thy majestic sway."

4 The apostles' glorious company,
And prophets crowned with light,
With all the martyrs noble host,
Thy constant praise recite.

5 The holy church, throughout the world,
O Lord, confesses thee,
That thou eternal Father art,
Of boundless majesty.

[blocks in formation]

1 BE joyful in God, all ye lands of the earth; O, serve him with gladness and fear; Exult in his presence with music and mirth; With love and devotion draw near.

2 The Lord, he is God

and Jehovah alone,

Creator, and ruler o'er all;

And we are his people; his sceptre we own; His sheep, and we follow his call.

3 O, enter his gates with thanksgiving and song;

Your vows in his temple proclaim;

His praise with melodious accordance prolong,

And bless his adorable name.

4 For good is the Lord, inexpressibly good, And we are the work of his hand;

His mercy and truth from eternity stood,
And shall to eternity stand.

[blocks in formation]

1 O, PRAISE ye the Lord; his greatness pro

claim;

Jehovah our God, how awful thy name!

How vast is thy power, thy glory how great!
Lo! myriads of spirits thy mandates await!

2 Thy canopy's heaven, in splendor so bright! Thy chariot the clouds, thy garment the light.

The works of creation thy bidding perform;
Thou ridest the whirlwind, directest the

storm.

3 What wisdom is shown, what power displayed,

In all that thy hand hath fashioned and made!

The earth full of riches, in beauty complete; The fathomless ocean, with wonders replete.

4 0 thou, our great God, Redeemer and King, With hearts full of love, to thee will we

sing;

To life's latest moment our voices we'll raise,

And join the full chorus of blessing and praise.

I also will praise Thee.

1 FATHER, I love to read of thee,
And learn of heaven above;

To hear what thou hast done for me,
By thy unceasing love;
