2 O, may the beams of truth divine,
With clear, convincing light,
In all our understandings shine,
And chase our mental night.

3 Preserve us, Lord, throughout the day,
And guide us by thine arm;
For they are safe, and only they,
Whom thou dost save from harm.

Morning Praise.

1 My God was with me all this night,
And gave me sweet repose;

My God did watch, e'en whilst I slept,
Or I had never rose.

2 Lord, for the mercies of the night
My humble thanks I pay;

And unto thee I dedicate

The first fruits of the day.

3 Let this day praise thee, O my God,
And so let all my days;
And O, let mine eternal day
Be thine eternal praise.

1 DEAR is the hallowed morn to me, When cheerful bells awake the day: And, by their sacred minstrelsy,

Call me from earthly cares away;· 2 And dear to me the sacred hour Spent in thy holy temples, Lord!

To feel devotion's soothing power,
To hear the teachings of thy word.
3 Oft, when the world, with iron hands,
Has bound me in its six days' chain,
This bursts me from the earthly bands,
And sets my spirit free again.

4 Yes, dear to me the Sabbath morn :
The cheerful bells, with wakening voice,
Have often found my heart forlorn,
But always bid that heart rejoice.

1 CALLED by the Sabbath bells away,
Unto thy holy temple, Lord,
I'll go, with willing mind to pray,
To praise thy name, and hear thy word
2 O sacred day of peace and joy,

Thy hours are ever dear to me;
Ne'er may a sinful thought destroy
The holy calm I find in thee.
3 Dear are thy peaceful hours to me,
For God has given them in his love,
To tell how calm, how blest shall be
The endless day of heaven above.

1 LET us adore the grace that seeks
To draw our hearts above;
For, lo! the great Jehovah speaks,
And every word is love.

C

2 Lord, help us now to seek thy face, By Christ, the living way;

19

20

And praise thee for this hour of grace
Through an eternal day!

S. M.
Morning.

1 WE lift our hearts to thee,
Thou Day-star from on high;
The sun itself is but thy shade,
Yet cheers both earth and sky.
2 O, let thy rising beams
Dispel the shades of night;
And let the glories of thy love
Come like the morning light.
3 May we this life improve,
To mourn for errors past;
And live this short revolving day
As if it were our last.

S. M.
Morning.

1 BEHOLD, the morning sun
Begins his glorious way!

His beams through all the nations run,
And life and light convey.

2 But where the gospel comes,
It spreads diviner light;

It calls dead sinners from their tombs,
And gives the blind their sight.

3 How perfect is thy word!
And all thy judgments just!
Forever sure thy promise, Lord,
And men securely trust.

21

4 My gracious God, how plain
Are thy directions given!
O, may I never read in vain,
But find the path to heaven!

C. M.
Sabbath Morning.

1 SLEEP, sleep to-day, tormenting cares, Of earth and folly born!

Ye shall not dim the light that streams
From this celestial morn.

2 To-morrow will be time enough
To feel your harsh control!

Ye shall not violate this day,
The Sabbath of the soul.

3 Sleep, sleep forever, guilty thoughts! Let fires of vengeance die;

22

And, purged from sin, may I behold
A God of purity!

C. M.
Sabbath Morning.

1 AGAIN the Lord of life and light
Awakes the kindling ray;

Unseals the eyelids of the morn,
And pours increasing day.

2 O, what a night was that which wrapt
The heathen world in gloom!
O, what a sun, which broke, this day,
Triumphant from the tomb!

3 This day be grateful homage paid,
And loud hosannas sung;

Let gladness dwell in every heart,
And praise on every tongue.

1 ENOUGH of life's vain scenes I've trod; Sweet is this interval of rest:

With cheerful heart I meet my God; His presence makes me truly blest. 2 Pleasant is life, and sweet the light That pours from the bright orb of day, Revealing to our raptured sight

The world in all its rich display.

3 Pleasant is life, and sweet its ties,
The touching charities of man;
Friend, fellow, child, and parent rise,
Endearing life's progressive plan.

4 But light and life would soon be vile,
And all their dearest pleasures fall,
Nor sun would shine, nor life would smile
Without thy presence glad'ning all.

1 LET us unite to bless the Lord,
That we are taught to read his word-
To walk in wisdom's pleasant ways,
And seek his grace, and sing his praise.
2 We, to thy sacred house of prayer,
With gratitude would oft repair,
T'adore thy name, and seek thy face,
And hear thy messages of grace.
3 The truth thy gospel, Lord, imparts,
Apply with power to all our hearts;
Whilst thou art calling, make us hear,
And worship thee with holy fear.
