HIS is a small, but very ancient edifice, situated on the banks of the river Lunan, at its confluence with the German Ocean, and about

five miles to the south of Mon

trose.

have been founded by William the Lion, who reigned in Scotland from 1165 to 1214. Mr Chalmers, how ever, supposes it to have been built by Lord Berkeley, a favourite of that prince. (Caledonia, Vol. I. p. 529.) A very full description of this Castle, and its vicinity, is given by our ingenious correspondent, who lately favoured us with the narrative of a Tour from Arbroath to Montrose. (See Magazine for April last, p. 260-1.) This writer, as will be seen, differs from Mr Chalmers, and adopts the common opinion, which ascribes the origin of the edifice to William the Lion.

HAVING been absent from Edin

burgh for six or seven years, and having lately returned to my native city, I was much struck and delighted with the numerous beautiful edifices which have recently arisen to adorn the Queen of the North." On perusing some of the Edinburgh Newspapers, I was highly pleased to observe estimates advertised for building and completing the grand New Church in Charlotte Square. Having all my life been an amateur in the noble science of architecture, and having, previous to my leaving home, been well acquainted with the admirable designs of our celebrated countryman Robert Adam, for the different parts
