-Let mortals learn,

When in obedience to the Gods they tread
The doubtful paths of deftiny, to affront
The dreadful't dangers with undaunted fpirit;-
Let them not, even in worst extremes, defpair;
For while they keep to virtue's narrow paths,
With guards invincible they march furrounded:
The Gods who furely guide them on their way,
From them no more than from themselves can stray,
For virtue's of divinity a ray!

PREFACE.

HESE valuable FABLES were first printed by a Bookfeller, who, devoid of all Ambition, centered every wish within the bounds of mediocrity, and contented with acquiring, by his Trade, a competency, neglected to exert thofe fanguine endeavors in extending that unlimited circulation of them, to which their merit fo juftly entitled them: it may therefore be faid, with great propriety, that they are prefented to the Public, as a new Work, well deferving the attention of all those any way interested in the Education of Youth, and particularly fo of Parents, whose tenderness would render them defirous of conveying Inftruction in the most pleafing manner.
