The annual address was delivered by Dr. F. X. Dercum, of Philadelphia, his subject being "Railroad Shock and Its Treatment." At the afternoon session there was a lively debate over a proposed amendment of the constitution, as follows: "Every member of the association shall be a member in good and regular standing of the medical society of the county in which he resides."

The opponents of the amendment claimed that it was in the interest of cliques in Philadelphia, who were continually black balling good men and keeping them out of the County Medical Society. A standing vote was taken, which resulted in the defeat of the amendment by a vote of 21 to 13 The following officers were elected for the ensuing yea President, Dr. H. L. VULLIET-LUTAUD'S OPERATIVE GYNECOLOGY1 is a report of the lectures delivered by Drs Lutaud and Vulliet, opening with the following very decided eulogy of Sims:

"What progress has been accomplished in less than a quarter of a century! Sims, that daring innovator, who during the war of secession had left his country, arrived in France and astonished the veterans of surgery by his practical genius Velpau and Nelaton received him with enthusiasm, and the treatment of vesico-vaginal fistula became a current operation. His Clinical Notes on Uterine Surgery,' published simultaneously in Paris and London, in 1866, was the point of departure of the great surgical movement which rapidly radiated all over Europe.

"This brok, under its modest title, contains the germ of all the gynecological innovations which today rank among classical operations, etc.'

The lectures discuss Methods of Exp'oration, Uterine Catheterism, Uterine Dilation, Displacements Curettage, Trachelor raphy, Genito-Urinary Fistula, Uterine Fibromata Massage in Gynecology, Uterine Cancer, Uterine Orthopaedics, Sterility and Artificial Fecundation. Sterility is classified as follows: 1. Sterility by inaptitude for copulation (vulvitis, vaginismus, vaginal atresia, etc.)

2. Sterility by mechanical obstruction to sperm penetration of the uterus (uterine atresia, flections, conicity of cervix, etc.)

3. Sterility from non retention of the sperm in the uterus, or the destruction of the ovum by morbid secretions (as in dysmenorrhoea, menorrhagia, amenorrhagia, endometritis, uterine catarrh, etc.)

4. Sterility by inaptitude to ovulation and incubation (disturbances of the ovarian function, amenorrhoea, infantile uterus, absence of the ovaries, ovarian etopia, etc.)

Artificial impregnation was tried twenty-six times. Twice it succeeded perfectly. Twice abortion resulted at the third month, and twenty-two times the procedure did not succeed.

ERLENMEYER'S MORPHINE HABIT TREATMENT.1 is a valuable contribution to the literature of the subject. He advises the rapid withdrawal of the drug. Unless the patient can be placed in an institution under absolute control, treatment is vain in Dr. Erlenmeyer's judgment. In this opinion the majority of those who have experience with the peculiar deceptions of the victims of the habit will concur. The work is well translated.

SENN'S SURGICAL BACTERIOLOGY2 is an interesting contribution to bacteriology as viewed from the

needs and standpoin of the surgeon. It is a careful examination of the relations of bacteria to surgical complications, and is pervaded by the enthusiasm of a devotee of the germ theory. The work is well illustrated.

SAUNDBY'S BRIGHT'S DISEASE1 is an interesting and valuable contribution to the history of renal disease. It is fairly illustrated, but the typographical work is miserable.

KEATING'S CYCLOPEDIA OF THE DISEASES OF CHILDREN.3-The introductory chapter by Dr. A. Jacobi, opens with a concise definition of the scope of pediatry in which Dr. Jacobi very appropriately says: "Pædiatry is no specialty in the common acceptation of the term. It does not deal with an organ, but with the entire organism at the only period which presents the most interesting features to the student of biology and medicine. Infancy and childhood are links between conception and death, between the foetus and the adu't. The latter has attained a certain degree of invariability. His physiological labor is reproduction, that of the young is both reproduction and growth. Pædiatry does not deal with miniature men and women, with rereduced doses and the same class of diseases in smaller bodies, but it has its own independent range and horizon, and gives much to general medicine as it has received from it."

Dr. G. McClellan discusses the "Antatomy of Children" in well illustrated, but rather labored chapters.

Dr. Jas. Finlayson has written an excellent chapter on "Diagnosis." The chapter on "Outlines of Practical Bacteriology" is out of place in the present work. The chapter on "Maternal Impressions" is a "pot boiler," and contains nothing new nor newly put. There are too many European contributors to this work on diseases which are rare in Europe but common in the United States. This is one of its great defects. On the whole, however, the work is one likely to be of great service to the practical physician.
