deemed by the blood of Christ, and sanctified by the gracious influences of thy Holy Spirit. Bless the dear child which Thou hast given her. Let the life so graciously admitted amidst privations into this world of sin and woe be sanctified to Thee even from the womb. Let this little one be a lamb of Christ's flock, and be borne through life in the arms of the Good Shepherd till it reach thy dwelling place in heaven. Be gracious to its parents, O Lord, and teach them to consecrate their hearts and their hearts' affections to Thee. May the father, by precept and example and prayer, command all his family to keep the way of the Lord! May the mother be a mother in Israel, travailing spiritually in birth for all her offspring till Christ be formed in their hearts, the hope of glory! Be pleased in thy good time to perfect her recovery; and when Thou hast finished thy purposes with parents and offspring here, may they stand at last before Thee a whole family in heaven! Hear us, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

SCRIPTURE TO RE READ-Acts xxvii. ver. 20 to the end.

PRAYER.

O LORD out of the depths we cry to Thee. In the floods of great waters let them not come nigh to overwhelm us; be Thou our hiding-place; fill our mouths with songs

of deliverance. Save us, O God! we perish; the waters come in unto our souls. But Thou art able to save unto the uttermost, O God of Israel, our Saviour: let thine almighty arm make haste to help; stir up thy strength and might, and come and save us. Surely, unless Thou hadst been our help, already we must have been consumed; the waters must have overwhelmed us; the floods must have gone over our souls. O let the lives which Thou hast kept from being a prey be spared to praise Thee. Send, we beseech Thee, from above-deliver us, draw us out of deep waters; in thine own way let deliverance speedily be afforded; let us escape safely to dry land, and wherever our lot shall fall, let kind succour and deliverance await us, that we may survive still to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

But, O God, if we shall behold man no more, and instant death await us, reveal thy dear Son in us; take away the sting of death, which is sin, from our guilty hearts; renew our depraved natures by thy Holy Spirit; and finally admit us into the presence of thy glory with exceeding joy. And, O! have mercy on the dear friends who may be bereaved by our untimely death. Lord, be a father to the fatherless, a husband to the widow, and a very present help to those who may be left desolate by our removal. May God be their unfailing portion and everlasting joy, that we may meet them all at last in the better land, where sorrow and death are for ever unknown.

But, O, for thy great mercy's sake, we again entreat Thee to spare, to rescue, to make a way of escape for us. Lord, give ear to our cry; hold not thy peace at our tears.. Give us help from trouble, for vain is the help of men; and to Thee be praise and glory for ever in Christ Jesus. Amen.

IN CASE OF A MAN FALLING OVERBOARD, OR OF SUDDEN DEATH AT SEA.

HYMN, C. M.

1 Naked as from the earth we came,
And entered life at first :
Naked we to the earth return,

And mix with kindred dust.

2 Whate'er we fondly call our own,
Belongs to heav'n's great Lord,
The blessings lent us for a day
Are soon to be restor❜d.

3 "Tis God that lifts our comforts high,
Or sinks them in the grave:
He gives and when He takes away,
He takes but what he gave.

4 Then, ever blessed be his name!
His goodness swell'd our store :
His justice but resumes its own;
'Tis ours still to adore.

SCRIPTURE TO BE READ-Psalm xlix.

PRAYER.

VERILY Thou art a God that hideth thyself, O God of Israel our Saviour. Thou makest darkness thy secret place, and from Thee destruction hath no covering. Who can by searching find out God? Thou turnest man unto destruction, and Thou sayest, Return ye children of men ; neither is there any that can challenge thy procedure, or flee from thy judgments. Our very flesh trembles for fear of Thee, O Lord, and we are afraid of thy righteous judgments. When with rebukes Thou dost correct man for his iniquity, Thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth; surely every man is vanity. It hath seemed good unto Thee, O God, suddenly, as in a moment, to remove one of our company from the midst of us. As the fishes

that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, so has he been snared in an evil time when it hath fallen suddenly upon him. And what shall we say, O Lord God? We know that thy judgments are righteous; and we would be dumb, not opening our mouths because Thou hast done it. O that all of us who survive may lay it to heart! Let us hear thy voice, saying to each of us, Thus may I do unto thee, and because it may be thus done unto thee prepare to meet thy God. And when thus we gather around the grave's devouring mouth, where

there is but a step between us and death, and we stand in jeopardy every hour, good Lord, teach us to die daily. Let us seek personal and present acceptance with Thee through the blood of atonement, that we may be delivered all our life from the sting and the tormenting fear of death; and being always ready, may meet its visitation when it comes with peaceful hope and patient waiting-for of Christ. God, succour Thou the sorrowful hearts who shall soon be called to mourn this day's distressing bereavement. Prepare them for those evil tidings, and be Thou to them better than all the friends of earth whom Thou art taking away. We would feel for their affliction, and entreat for them the compassion and sympathy of the blessed Saviour. And now fit, we beseech Thee, every one of us, for whatever is thy gracious will concerning us. May our lives be hid with Christ in God, that when Christ, who is our life, shall appear, we also may appear with Him in glory! Hear us in mercy for thy dear Son's sake. Amen.

BLESSED JEHOVAH! Thou fillest heaven and earth. Whatsoever the Lord pleaseth, He doeth in heaven and in earth, in the seas and all deep places. Thou commandest the sun,

and sealest up the stars, and treadest upon the waves of the sea. We, thy helpless and dependent creatures, again commend ourselves to thy watchful and guardian care, when we set forth upon the bosom of the ocean to seek our distant home. Lord, Thou hast helped us hitherto; O still be mindful of us, and bless us; lead us forth by a right way to a city of habitation.

In all our wanderings let us continually wait on Thee. Be Thou our refuge every morning, and our covert every night. Give to the sea its decree, that it may afford us a safe passage. Let the winds, which wait on thy pleasure, favour and forward us on our way. Preserve us, we beseech Thee, from storm or shipwreck, from the treacherous shoal, and from dangerous collisions. Bless our officers and crew, with faith in thy Son, and renewed obedience to thy commandments, that we may be a well ordered and happy company in all our voyagings. Let vice and crime be unknown amongst us, that we may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty. Be pleased, O Lord, to defend us from all dangerous diseases, and from all painful or fatal accidents, that we may be preserved in health and peace to return to our own homes.

Be gracious to the kind friends that are anxiously awaiting our return, and prepare them and us for a happy meeting in thy fear. Deal kindly with the land we are leaving, and bless its people with the gospel of thy salvation. O God, in all our voyagings bring us nearer to thyself. Prepare us for an approaching eternity, and bring us at last to thy kingdom in glory, where we shall weep no more, neither be weary nor wander any more. Hear us for Christ the Redeemer's sake. Amen.
