Duff, Earl of Fife.

HE Right Hon. James Duff, Earl of

opinion of Scots writers, that the family of Duff, derive their origin from Macduff, Thane of Fife, (a name or title equivalent to that of Baron,) created Earl thereof, by King Malcolm Canmore, in the year 1957, to which King he did extraordinary fervices, in awiting him to revenge his father's death upon Macbeth, and to recover his crown. And it is beyond doubt, that Duncan, the 11th Earl of Fife, who was killed at the battle of Falkirk, anno 1248, had a younger fon Malcolm, who married a daughter of Duncan Thane, of Calder, by whom he got a confiderable eftate in the counties of Aberdeen and Banff, where he fettled, and was progenitor of the Duffs.

The family of Fife are defcended of the Strathbolgies, Earls of Athole, who for feveral generations lived in the north parts of Scotland; they were diftinguifhed by the appellation of Strathbolgie, from the place of their refidence, and were defcended of David, fon of Duncan, the 6th Earl of Fife, as is fully let forth, in the books of heraldry ia Scotland, under the title of Earl of Athole.

David de Strathbolgie, the 11th Earl of Athole, married Jean, eldest daughter and coheir of John Cumin, Lord of Badenoch, and had feveral fons. He was killed in 1335, at the battle of Filblane, and was fucceeded oy his eldeft fon, David, the 12th Earl, who turned an enemy to his country, joined the English, and adhered to their intereft ever after, for which he was forfeited, and died in England, without male iffue, in October, 1575.

The younger brothers of this laft Earl, fettled in the north of Scotland, and after their brother's forfeiture, were obliged to quit the appellation of Strathbolgie, and affumed that of Duff, to denote their defcent from the great and ancient Macduffs, Earls of Fife, of which there are many proots in the hiftories of Scots writers, particularly in Sir Robert Douglas's peerage of that kingdom; along with the great efiate of Strath

Brace called this family had

co, of Kilbride, county of Cavan, fucceeded bis father William, the late and firft Earl, in December, 1763. He married Lady Dorothea Sinclair, (born in 1739,) only daughter of Alexander, the 9th Earl of Caithnes, by his wife, the Lady Margaret Primore, daughter of Archibald, the first Earl of Rofeberry.

There are feveral confiderable families in Scotland, who claim their defcent from the great and ancient Macdufis, Thanes, and Laris of Fife, of which this family is one, and the rife and defcent of that illuit:ious houfe, is fully fet forth in all books of the Hiftories of families Scotland. Mr. Lodge, in his peerage of inciand, gives it as the

the lands and eftate of Muldavit and Baida vie, in Banffshire.

David Duff, of whom the Earl of Fife is lineally defcended, was proprietor of the lands and barony of Muldavit and Baldavie, in the county of Banff, and were defigned by chat title, in the reign of King Robert 3d, of Scots, which is confirmed by charter under the great feal of that Prince, which charter is upon record, and the principal in the cuftody of the family, and was alfo proprictors of the lands of Craighead, Anchingre, Darbreich, Findachiy field, and others; he was fucceeded by his fon, and fucceffor, John, who flourished in the reign of James the Firft, and was fucceeded by Bbbbz

Alexander of Keithmore, whose armorial bearing is recorded in the Heralds Office, 1676; he married Helen, daughter of Alexander Grant, of Ballintomb, anceftor of Sir Archibald Grant, of Moneymufk, Bart. by whom he had 3 fons and 3 daughters, viz. rft, Alexander, his heir, afterwards of Bracco; 2d, William of Dipple, afterwards of Bracco, the Earl of Fife's great grand father; 3d, Patrick, of Crayftown.

(1st Earl.) William, the only fon, was a member in the British parliament, for the county of Banif, and like a true patriot always adhered to the intereft of his country; he was created a peer of Ireland, by the tile of Lord Bracco, of Kilbride, by privy feal of Queen Caroline, when regent, bearing date 17th June, and by patent 28th July, 1735. His Lordfhip in the late rebellion of Scotland, joined his Royal Highnefs the Duke of Cumberland, at Aberdeen, in March, 1745, and made a free and noble offer of his fervices to the government, in any fhape his Majefty fhould require, On

the 26th April, 1759, he was further advanced by patent, to the dignities of Vifccunt Macduff, and Earl of Fife, in faid kingdom, to him and his heirs male for ever.
