Skeffington, Earl of Maffareene. HE Right Hon. Sir Clotworthy Skeffington, Earl and Viscount Massereene, Baron of Loughneagh and Baronet, was born in Dublin 28th January 1742, and fucceeded his father Clotworthy the late and firft Earl in 1764. His Lordship is at prefent a batchelor.

His ancient family of Skeffington, derives its name from the village of Skeffington, in the hundred of Eaft Gofcote in the county of Leicester; which, as it hath given name to fo worthy a family, fo it hath received reputation from the fame, many of them having been fuch perfons of worth, as to grace the place of their nativity in which they were feated for many ages. For

Simon Skeffington, lived there in the reign of Edward the ift. and John Skeffington of Fisherwick in the county of Stafford, ancef tor of the Earl of Maffareene, married Alice the feventh daughter of Sir Thomas Cave, Bart. and was father of Sir William, who by King Charles I. was created a Baronet of England, 8th May 1627. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Dering, Efq; by whom he had two fons, Sir John and Sir Richard, who both enjoyed the title, and fix daughters, viz. Elizabeth, married to Michael Biddulph, Efq; Cicily, to Edward Mitton, Efq; Mary, to Rich. Pyot, Efq; Hefter, to Sir Wm Bowyer, Knt. Lettice, to John Bayly, Efq; Alice, to ter, Efq.

(2d. Baronet.) Sir John Skeffington, the fecond Baronet, married Cicely, fifter to Sir John Skeffington, of Skeffington, and had an only fon.

net, who died unmarried foon after his father, and was fucceeded by his uncle.

(4th Baronet.) Sir Richard, the 4th Baronet, who married Anne, youngest daugh ter of Sir John Newdigate by whom he had three fons and three daughters, viz. ift fon, Sir John, his fucceffor, created Viscount Maffarcene.

all three died unmarried.

2d, Richard, 3d, William, ift daughter Anne, ad, Mary, married Wm Bunbury, Efq; brother to Sir Tho. Bunbury, Bart. by whom fhe had iffue.

3d, Elizabeth, married to Wm Ferrar, Efq; and died without iffue.

(1ft. Viscount.) Sir John, the fifth Baronet, married Mary, daughter and heir to Sir John Clotworthy of the co. of Antrim, who was of the Privy Council, and on 21ft Nov. 1660, was created Baron of Loughneagh and Viscount Maffareene, entailing the honours, on failure of his iffue male, to Sir John Skeffington, and the iffue male of his body, by the faid Mary, and for default of fuch iffue, to the heirs general of the body of the faid Sir John Clotworthy; and he dying 25th of September 1665, was fucceeded in title and eftate by his fon-in-law, Sir John Skeffington, who died 21ft June 1695, leaving iffue by his faid lady, three fons and four daughters, viz. John, born in 1663, John in 1666, who both died young; Clotworthy, his fucceffor; Mary, married to Sir Charles Houghton, Bart. Margaret, to Sir George St. George, Bart. Anne, died young; and Frances. His Lordship was a great affertor of the Proteftant cause, and was a great fufferer: He was attainted by King James's parliament, the 7th May 1689,
