This noble Lord was defcended from the ancient family of Child, (heretofore fometimes written Le Child, and likewife L'Enfant) in Worcestershire, but the prime Anceftors of this Family were originally Lords of Arcal Pawe, thence called Childs Arcal, in the county of Salop; which line ended long fince, in Richard L'Enfant, or Child, who left Anne, his daughter and fole heir, married to John Baldwin of Diddlebury, in the fame county, whofe pofterity in right of that match, quarter the arms of Child, borne alfo by William Lacon Child, Efq. William Child of Northwick, county of Worcester, was father of Edmund, whofe fon William, married Anne daughter to Mr. Huncks, and by her had William Child, of Pentack, who had iffue William, who married Catherine, daughter of Sir Thomas Coventry, Chief Justice of the Court of Common-Pleas, by her had John Child, from whom defcended Richard Child, of the City of London, merchant, whofe wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Roycroft, of Weftonfwick, county of Salop, Efq; and by her he had two fons and a daughter, of the fons, which were John, and

(Ift Baronet.) Jofiah, the latter, on May 7th, 1638, fucceeded his father, and was created a Baronet, he married, first Anne, daughter to Edward Boat, of Portsmouth, Efq; and had two fons who died in their infancy, and a daughter Elizabeth, married to John Howland. of Stretham, county of Surry, Efq; who had a daughter of her name who was married to Wriothefly Ruffell, duke of Bedford. The faid Jofiah married fecondly, Mary, daughter to William Atwood, merchant, and widow of Thomas Stone, of London, merchant, by whom he had one fon Jofiah, and two daughters, of the daughters, (1) Rebecca, married Charles Somerfet, Marquis of Worcefter, eldeft fon of Henry the first Duke of Beaufort, by whom fhe had iffue, Henrietta, married Charles Fitzroy, Duke of Grafton, and Henry 2d, Duke of Beaufort. (2d) Mary, married to Edward Bullock, Efq; and had, iffue, Sir Jofiah, married to his third wife Emma, younger daughter and co-heir to Sir Henry Barnard, of Stoke, county of Salop, Knt. widow of Francis Willoughby, of Wollaton, county of Nottingham, Efq; (father by her, of Thomas, created Lord Middleton) and by her had two fons, Barnard, who died in the 21st year of his age unmarried, and Richard, Created Earl of Tylney.

(2d Baronet.) Sir Jofiah, the only fon by the 2d wife and the 2d Baronet, married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Sir Thomas Cooke, Knt. but dying without issue by her the 20th January, 1704, was fucceeded by his half brother,

(1ft Earl.) Richard, the 3d Baronet, reprefented the county of Effex, in Parliament for 37 years. His Majefty King George the 1ft, was pleased to create hin by privy feal the 7th of April, and by patent the 17th of that month, 1718, Baron of Newtown and Viscount Caftlemaine, and King George the 2d, was graciously pleated to advance him to a higher degree of honour, by creating him Earl of Tylney of Caftlemaine, by privy feal, 12th of May, 1731, and by patent, 11th of January, 1732, and 24th of March, 1734, gave his Royal Affent by act of parliament, to enable his Lordfhip's eldest son, and his heirs, to affume and use the furname of Tylney, by reafon of a very large eftate (7000l. per Ann.) which devolved to the Lady Tylney, as heir to Anne, Lady Craven, daughter to Frederick Tylney, of Rotherwick, in the county of Southampton, Efq. His Lordship married Dorothy, only furviving daughter and heir to John Glynne, of Henley Park, in Surry, Efq; (by his wife Dorothy, daughter to Francis Tylney, of Rotherwick, Efq;) and by her who died 23d of February, 1743, had three fons and two daughters, viz.

ift Son, Richard, who returned from his travels, the 30th of March, 1733, and died of the finall pox the 19th of February following.

2d. John, the late and 2d Earl of Tylney. 3d. Jofiah, an officer in General Bland's Dragoons, who married in 1754, Lady Henrietta Knight, only daughter of Robert late Earl of Catherlough, and died without iffue.

ift Daughter, Lady Emma, married the 29th of May, 1735, to the late Sir Robert Long, Bart. by whom he had the prefent Sir James Tylney Long, who has fucceeded his Uncle the late Earl of Tylney in his eftates, &c.

2d. Lady Dorothy, died unmarried.

And his Lordship dying in France, in March 1750, was fucceeded by his 2d but cldeft furviving fon.

HE Right Honourable William PonfonThor Beborough, Viscount

Duncannon, Baron of Befborough, in Ireland; Lord Ponfonby, Baron Ponfonby, of Syfonby, in England; one of the Lords of his Majefty's most honourable Privy Council in both kingdoms, a Truftee of the British Mufeum, Vice Admiral of the Province of Munfter, Lord Lieutenant and Cuftos Rotulorum for the county of Kilkenny, fucceeded his father Brabazon, the 1ft and late Earl, the 4th July, 1758; and in June, 1739, married the honourable Lady Caroline Cavendish, eldest daughter to William, Duke of Devonshire, then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and by her, who died January the 20th, 1760, he had issue, viz.

Ift fon, John, Lord Viscount Duncannon, late one of the Lords of the Admiralty, born 27th September, 1749, and married 23d November, 1780, to the Honourable Lady Henrietta Frances Spencer, daughter to the late, and fifter to the prefent Earl Spencer; by whom he has iffue,"

it daughter, Lady Catherine, born 25th October, 1742, married the 4th May, 1763, to the Right Honourable Aubrey, the prefent Lord Vere; and by her, who died in February, 1783, he had two fons and one daughter.

ad, Lady Charlotta, born 10th December, 1747, married the 11th July, 1770, to the Right Honourable William, the prefent Earl of Fitzwilliam.

Befides thefe his Lordship has had fix ether children, who died in their infan

This noble family derives its origin from Picardy, and their prime anceftor in this kingdom accompanying William, Duke of Normandy, in his expedition to England, his pofterity eftablished their refidence at Haugh-Heale, near Whitehaven, in Cumberland, where they poffeffed a good eftate, d took their name from the Lordflip of

Ponsonby, of which they were owners, and had conferred upon them the office of Barber to the Kings of England, much about the time (as is faid) that the Earl of Arran's ancestors was appointed the office of Butler, to which the coat armour bears an allufion.

John Ponfonby, of Haugh-Heale, Efq; was the father of Simon, his fucceffor there, whofe fon Henry, by Dorothy, daughter to Mr. Sandys, of Rottendon, in Cumberland, had iffue two fons, Sir John, and Henry, who both fettled in Ireland; from the latter of whom is defcended Richard Ponfonby, of Crotto, county Kerry, Efq; and Sir John, the anceffor to the Earl of Besborough, who was a Colonel of Horfe in Cromwell's army. He died in 1678. He married Elizabeth, elde ft daughter to Henry, Lord Folliott, of Ballyfhannon, (widow of Richard, for and heir of Sir Edward Wingfield, and

mother of Folliott, Lord Viscount Powerfcourt); and by her (who was also relict of Edward Trevor, brother to Marcus, Lord Viscount Dungannon) had two fons and a daughter, Sir Henry and William; Elizabeth, married, 1673, to Richard, Lord Viscount Shannon.

Sir Henry Ponfonby, married the 1ft October, 1674, Dorothy, daughter of Captain Shaw, of Drogheda, but dying without iffue the eftate devolved to his brother,

(Ift Baron and 1ft Viscount.) William Ponfonby, of Besborough, Efq; who ferved in the Parliament during the reign of Queen Anne, for the county of Kilkenny, until he was created a Peer. In September, 1715, he was called into the Privy Council, and by privy feal, dated 28th July, and by patent, 11th September, 1721, was created Baron Befborough, of Befborough; and was further advanced by privy feal, dated 30th December, and by patent, 28th February, 1722, to the dignity of Viscount Duncannon. He married, Mary, daughter of the Honourable Randle Moore, of Ardee, brother to Henry, the firft Earl of Drogheda; by whom he had iffue three fons and fix daughters, viz.

ift fon, Brabazon, created Earl of Befborough.

2d, Henry, of Afhgrove, county Kilkenny, who embracing a military life was promoted to be Colonel of a regiment; and February, 1741, was made Brigadier General; in 1742, was appointed as a general officer to command the troops fent into Flanders; and 14th July, 1743, he was made a Major General; but loft his life at the head of his regiment 11th May, 1745, in the battle of Fontenoy. He married the Lady Frances Bral azon, youngest daughter to Chambre, the 5th Earl of Meath; by whom he left one fon and one daughter.

3d, Folliott, was a Captain of Horfe. He married Jane, daughter to Captain Taylor, of Cork; and dying 14th October, 1746, left a fon, who died 1748.

ift daughter, Elizabeth, who was firft married to Richard Moore, of Kilworth, in the county of Cork, Efq; (fon of Stephen Moore, Efq;) who dying before his father, in 1701, left one fon, Stephen, created Lord Baron Kilworth, and Vilcount Mountcafhell, and was father of the prefent Earl of Mountcafhell. She married, fecondly, Thomas Newcomen, of Dovehill, county Tipperary, Efq; by whom the had three fons and one daughter.

2d, Anne, who was firft marrried to Nicholas Loftus, of Loftus Hall, county of Wexford, Efq; who was created Baron and Vifcount Loftus, the 5th October, 1751; by whom she had iffue, 1ft, Nicholas, created Earl of Ely, who married Mary, eldeft daughter to Sir Guftavus Hume, Bart. and had iffue Nicholas Loftus Hume, who fucceeded him as Earl of Ely, and died without iffue. 2d, John, died in 1714. 3d, Henry, who was first married to Mifs Munro, and fecondly to Mifs Bonfoy, by neither of whom he had iffue; he fucceeded his nephew, as Viscount Loftus, and was created Earl of Ely 22d November, 1771, and died in 1783. 4th, John; and three daughters; of whom Mary married William Alcock, Efq; Anne to Charles Tottenham, Efq; Elizabeth to the prefent Sir John Tottenham, of Tottenham Green, Bart.

3d, Mary, married to William Wale, of Coolenamucky, county Waterford, Efq; by whom he had iffue three daughters, viz. Mary, married to John Baldwin, Efq; Catherine to Francis Sadlier, of Sopewellhall, county Tipperary, Efq; and has iffue; Anne to the Revd. Dr. Thomas Carr, fon of the late Bishop of Killaloe, and has issue.

4th, Bridget, firft wife to Arthur Weldon, of Raheen, Queen's County, Efq; and died without iffive.

5th, Dorothy, first wife to William Hore, of Harperftown, county Wexford,Efq; by whom he had one fon, Walter, married to Lady Anne Stopford, fifter to James, the prefent Earl of Courtown; Mary, married to John Cox, of Coolcliffe, Efq; and Anne.

6th, Letitia, married to James May, of Mayfield, Efq; and has iffue the present Sir James May, Bart. one of the Knights of the Shire for the County Waterford; and a daughter, married to Thomas Carew, of Ballynemona, in faid county, Efq; and two A others died young.

(Ift Earl.) Brabazon, the 1ft Earl, was born in 1679: On his fucceffion to the honour, he took his feat in the Houfe of Peers the 7th September, 1725, was one of the

Lords of the Privy Council, and one of the Commiffioners of the Revenue; and by privy feal, dated the 3ift Auguft, and by patent the 6th October, 1739, created him Earl of Befborough; and alfo the 12th June, 1749, advanced him to the dignity of Peer of Great Britain, by the title of Lord Ponfonby, Baron Ponfonby, of Syfonby; and in the March following conftituted Marefchal of the Admiralty in Ireland. He married to his firft wife, Sarah, daughter to James Margetfon, Efq; fon and heir to Doctor James Margetfon, Archbishop of Armagh, widow of Hugh Colville, Efq; fon and heir to Sir Robert Colville, of Newtown, in the county of Downe, and by her who died the 21ft of May, 1733, had four fons and fix daughters, he married fecondly, the 28th of November, 1733, Elizabeth, elder daughter and co-heir to John Sankey, of Tenelick, in the county of Longford, Efq; but by her, who was the widow of Sir John King, and of John Lord Tullamore, his Lordship had no iffue. His children by his firft wife were, viz.

Ift Son, Margetfon, born the 22d of December, 1709, who died young.

2d. William, the prefent Earl.

3d. John, born the 29th of March, 1713, he was Secretary to the Board of Commiffioners of the Revenue, and as one of which he fucceeded his father the 6th of Auguft, 1744, and in May 1748, he was appointed one of his Majefty's Privy Council, and was Speaker of the Houfe of Commons of Ireland for many years. On the 20th of September, 1743, he married the Honourable Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, fecond daughter of William Duke of Devonshire, and hath iffue, viz. nine daughters, four of whom died young, thofe that furvived were (1) Catharine, married the 15th of December, 1763, to Richard the fecond and prefent Earl of Shannon, by whom the has iffue, (2) Frances, married to Cornelius O'Callaghan, of Shanbally, county of Tipperary, Efq; by whom the had iffue, and is fince dead; Caroline, Charlotte, and Henrietta, are now living, alfo five fons, (1) William Brabazon, born the 15th of September, 1744, married to the Honourable Mifs Molefworth, fifter to Richard Naffau, the fourth and prefent Lord Viscount Molefworth, by whom he has iffue; in 1784, he was appointed a Joint Post Master General in Ireland, and one of the Privy Council, and is one of the Knights of the Shire for the county of Kilkenny; (2) John, who died young; (3) George, born the 15th of March, 1755, Barrifter at Law, and Council to the Commiffioners of the Revenue, Member of Parliament for the Borough of Inniftigue, who married Lady Mary Butler,
