Bligh, Earl of Darnley.
HE Right Hon. John Bligh, Earl of

boy, Baron Clifton, of Rathmore, in Ireland; and Baron Clifton, of Leighton Bromfwold, in the county of Huntingdon, in Great Britain, fucceeded his father, John, The late and third Earl, the 31st July, 1781, and is in his minority.

John Bligh, of London, Efq; (citizen and falter of that city, as he tells us himfelf) the founder of this noble family in Ireland, was employed as an agent to the adventurers for the forfeited eftates, by the rebellion of 1641, and in that quality came over in the time of Cromwell's government; when he also became an adventurer himself, and acquired a good eftate. In the firft Parliament after the reftoration he was returned M. P. for Athboy. He married Catherine, fifter to William, Lord Bishop of Lincoln, by whom he had Thomas, his only fon and heir, and five daughters.

Thomas Bligh, of Rathmore, Efq; the only fon and heir, was one of the reprefentatives in Parliament for the county of Meath, and one of the Privy Council to Queen Anne. He married Elizabeth, younger daughter to Colonel James Napier, of Loughcrew, in the county of Meath, and fifter to Lt. Gen. Robert Napier, and had iflue by her,

prefented the borough of Athboy in several Parliaments, and married, 19th Auguft, 1737, Elizabeth, fifter to William Bury, county. Limerick,

by whom he had one fon, born in 1739, who died foon after. He married, fecondly, Mifs Jones, fifter to the Right Honourable Theophilus Jones, Collector of the Port of Dublin, by whom he had no issue.

3d, Robert, in holy orders, who married the widow of Charles Boyle, of the county of Cork, Efq;

4th, Anthony was Lieutenant of Dragoons, and died unmarried.

Ift daughter, Catherine, married to Thomas Le Hunte, Efq, Barrifter at Law.

2d, Hannah, married to Maurice Cuffe, Efq; Barrister at Law, and brother to John, created Lord Defart.

3d, Elizabeth, roarried to George St. George, of Woodgift, Esq;

4th, Dorothy, to William Monck, Efq; 5th, Mary, unmarried.

6th, Sarah, married to William Gore, of Woodford, Efq;

(ft. Earl.) John, the eldest fon, in 1704, was M. P. for the borough of Athboy, which he reprefented till created a Peer, by the title of Baron Clifton, of Rathmore, by Privy Seal, dated 31ft July, and by Patent 14th September, 1721; and was fur ther created Vifconnt Darnley, of Athboy, by Privy Seal, dated 31ft December, 1722, and by Patent 7th March following; alio by Privy Seal, dated 2d June, and by Patent 29th of that month, 1725, was created Earl of Darnley. then only daughter and heir to Edward,
Earl of Clarendon, to whom Queen Anne,
as an additional fortune, gave the fum of
10,000l. and the title of Baronefs Clifton,
of Leighton Bromfwold, devolved on her
Ladyship and her iffue, in right of her mo-
ther, by which that title has been brought
into this family, they had ifiue three fons
and three daughters, viz.

2d, Lady Anne, married 17th September, 1742, and was the fecond wife of Robert Hawkins Magill, of Gill-Hall, county of Downe, Efq; by whom he had three daughters, (of whom Theodofia, the eldest, born the 5th September, 1743, was the only one that furvived, and became fole heirefs to her father, and is at prefent married to John, Earl of Clanwilliam, and has feveral

3d, Lady Theodofia, married in November, 1745, the Hon. Willian Crofbie, eldeft fon to Lord Brandon, who was afterwards created Viscount Crofbie and Earl of Glandore, by whom he had iffue the prefent Earl, and other children.

(2d Earl.) Edward, the fecond Earl, was born in 1715, finished his ftudies at Geneva, and took the tour of foreign countries. He was admitted a Fellow of the Royal Society, and in October, 1742, was appointed one of the Lords of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales; but dying 22d July, 1747, unmarried, was fucceeded by his brother,

(3d Earl.) John, the third Earl, was horn the 2d October, 1719, and married in September, 1766, Mifs Mary Stoyte, daughter and heir of John Stoyte, of Rofannah, in the county of Wicklow, Efq; by whom he had iffue,
