PREFACE.

In the general diffusion of ability to read, no apology need be offered by the minister of a populous parish, for the publication of his ordinary discourses. It is one of the best means he has within his reach, to make known to a large portion of his flock the truths which it is his duty to communicate to all. And in the acknowledged influence of the press, to refrain from printing, for lack of ability to write what is likely to succeed with the public in general, would argue more concern for his own reputation than for the good of his immediate charge. The clergy cannot be too frequently reminded, that in order to maintain their ascendancy as teachers, they must write plainly, print abundantly, and publish cheaply. Their works should be multiplied, in proportion to the increased multitude of readers. They should make to themselves, of the press, that voice of iron, and those hundreds of ceaseless tongues, which their subject above all others demands. And as they owe to it, under the blessing of God, the greater part of their own advantages, they would find it prove in practice no less largely effectual to the correct instruction of their people. For some attempts of the kind here intended, see Appendix I, II, III,
