A CERATE is a Confiftence in the next Cerates. Degree denfer than an Unguent, and thinner than a Plaifter: It is thus denominated from the principal Ingredient in the Compofition, viz. Wax, which in Latin is call'd Cera; for Wax, Oil, and fome other fofter Substances, diffolved or mix'd together, make a Cerate, as appears from the Compofition of the White Cerate of the Shops, which is this:

Take of the whiteft Wax Ziv. of Oil of Sweet-
Almonds 3v. of the finest Sperma Ceti zi. of
Cerufs wafb'd in Rofe Water Zifs. of Camphire
3fs. make them into a Cerate.

A PLAISTER is a Compofition of Oils, Plaifters. Waxes, Refins, Powders, &c. in fuch Confiftence as will keep its Form without running or fticking to any thing when cold, but yet is moist enough to be melted and spread, so as to adhere when warm, and not be brittle enough to crack or break off what it is fpread upon. But this is a Form fo well known, that any Description is fuperfluous, and therefore I fhall only give an Example of its Compofition in the Ammoniac Plaifter.

Take of ftrain'd Gum Ammoniacum Zvi. of Yellow Wax and Refin ā zv. of the fimple Melilot Plaifter, Ointment of Marshmallows, of the Oil of Bays, and Orrice, and Venice Turpentine, a zifs. of Goofe Fat Zi. of Sal Ammoniac, of Bryony Root, and the Root of Orrice, ā 3ss. of Galbanum and Bdellium à zii. Let them boil together till it becomes of a due Confiftence for a Plaifter.

To the foregoing may be added the following anomalous Forms, viz.

THE POTENTIAL CAUTERY; this is Potential made of a ftrong Lixivium of Pot-afhes and Cautery. Quick-lime boil'd to a Drynefs: It must be kept

Diet Drinks,

close stop'd in a Bottle, elfe it will imbibe the Air, and lofe its cauftic Quality. Its Ufe is declared in the Pharmaceutic Part of Surgery.

ELATERIUM; it is the Facula, i. e. the Settlings of the Juice of Wild Cucumbers dry'd. It is a violent Cathartic, and feldom prefcrib'd but in stubborn and defperate Cafes.

The

LAPIS INFERNALIS, or the Infernal Stone; the Compofition of which is as follows: Take Capital, i. e. the strongest Soap-Lees, any Quantity, and evaporate to a Dryness, and keep the Refidue in a Glass well ftop'd. LAPIS de GOA, or the Goa Stone. Prefcription for making which is thus: Take Hyacinths, Topaz, Sapphires, Rubies, and Pearls, a 3i. Emeralds 3fs. Oriental Bezcar, White and Red Coral, ā Zii. Musk and Ambergreafe a 3fs. Leaves of Gold N° xl. Let all be levigated into a fine impalpable Powder, and with Rofe-Water made into a Pafte, which is to be form'd into long or oval Balls, and Folifbed.

BESIDES thefe Officinal Compofitions, there arife feveral other Forms of Medicine from Extemporaneous Prefcription and Practice, according to the various Exigencies and Circumftances which attend the feveral Cafes and Intentions of Cure: The principal whereof here follow.

MEDICATED Wines, Ales, Meads, Wheys, &c. which all come under the general Denomination of Diet-Drinks, ftand firft in Order, and are in all chronical Cafes, and where the Diforder of a Conftitution is gradually to be gain'd upon, of very great Service. The making of thefe Wines, Ales, &c. is by taking a due Proportion of Medicinal Drugs and Simples, and hanging in a Bag in common Liquors. Thus,

Take Betony, Sage, Agrimony, Garden Scurvygrafs, Roman Wormwood, a m. iii. Roots of Elicampane and Horfe-radifh a ziv. Mix and put them into a Bag, and hang it in cong. iv. of new Ale while it works. N. B. This is an admirable Antifcorbutic.

EMULSION is a liquid Form made by Emulfions. blanching and bruifing oily Seeds and Kernels in a Marble Mortar with a Wooden Peftle, and beat up into a Pafte: Then the Liquors order'd are to be put in by degrees, and beat up with the Mafs, that fo the whole Pulp may be wash'd out; and the Liquor fqueez'd out and strain'd, being of a milky Colour, is the Emulfion intended, and is generally of the Emollient Kind. Thus to make the Cordial Emulfion,

Citron Seeds 3s. to which, when made into an
Emulfion and strain'd, add Pearl Sugar ziii.
and Oil of Nutmegs gr. i.

JULEP is a Form made of Simple and Com- Juleps. pound Water fweeten'd, and ferves principally as a Vehicle or Diluter to other Forms not fo convenient to take alone. Thus for a Diuretic Julep,

Take Parfley-Water ziv. White-Wine zvi. Oil of Tartar per Deliquium zii. Syrup of Marfbmallows 3i. and mix them for a Julep.

POTIONS or Draughts are a Liquid Form Potions. of Medicine to be drank at once, or at one Draught. And thus feveral other Forms, as Powders, Electuaries, &c. which to fome People are irksome or loathfome in Substance, may yet be easily taken in a Potion or Draught, being diffolved in any proper Water or Julep.

LINCTUS'S and LAMBATIVES are Forms thus call'd, as being to be lick'd up with the Tongue. These made a wonderful Noife and Show in the ancient State of this oftentatious and verbose Art, but are now much reduced; nothing but Pectorals, and what is grateful to the Tafte, being reducible hereto.

BOLUS or Bole originally fignifies a fat Earth, as the Armenian Bole or Earth, &c. but in Medicine it is applied to that extemporaneous Form of one Dofe, and of the Confiftence of an Electuary, too well known to want further Defcription.

GARGARISMS are a liquid Form of Medicine, made of Acids and Subaftringents, to wash the Mouth withal, in order to cool and cleanse it from Phlegm, &c. Or else are smooth and mucilaginous, to foften and heal it when fore and parched. Take an Example of a Detergent Gargle, thus;

Take Spring-Water 3vi. Rofe-Water Zii. Syrup of Mulberries Zifs. Oil of Vitriol gr. xv. cr q. f. to make it agreeably acid.

LOTIONS are, properly fpeaking, thofe Washings which are used for beautifying the Skin, and call'd Cofmetics; they are therefore made of fuch Ingredients as anfwer the Intention of repelling Eruptions, Pimples, and all cutaneous Foulneffes. The following is a very repelling Lotion.

Take common White Vitriol zi. Crude Alom zii. boil in 3xii. of Spring-Water to 3viii. Take off the Scum, and put it up for Use.

COLLYRIUMS are a Form of Medicine fuited to the Eyes, and are defigned to cool and repel hot fharp Humours; to which End there

Take Rhafis's White Troches zi. Rose-Water Zii. Or, Take Calamine levigated 3fs. Rofe-Water Zii. Or, Take Tutty levigated zfs. Rofe-Water Zii. Or, Take White Vitriol and Sugar of Lead a gr. v. Rofe-Water 3ii. With any of thefe wafh the Eyes at Discretion.

EMBROCATION; this I have already Embrocations. declared the Nature and Ufe of, and fhall here only fubjoin an Example of its Compofition. Take Oil of Tartar per Deliquium 3i. Spirit of Sal Ammoniac zii. Spirit of Wine 3viii. Mix for Ufe.

FOMENTATIONS being already de- Fomentations. scribed, I shall here only give a Recipe for one against the Scurvy.

Take Ground-Pine and Henbane a m. ii. Win-
ter's Cinnamon is. Horfe-radifh Roots and
Earth Worms added at last ā zii. Boil in Lime
Water biii. to bii. and to the Straining add
Spirit of Scurvygrafs Zii. and Opium zi.

LINIMENT; this is alfo defcribed as to Liniments. its Ufe. The Manner of its Composition you will fee by the following Example of one for fore

Take fresh Butter without any Salt Ziv. White
Wax 3. Tutty prepar'd 3s. Camphire ii.
Make all into a Liniment.

CATAPLASMS are made after the Manner Cataplafms. of this following one against Apoplexies and Diforders of the Head.
