PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

The popularity of this little book, and the, numbers sold, have been much greater than was anticipated by its most sanguine friends. The first edition was large, and, though sold only from the Depository here, was exhausted some time ago. The present edition has been somewhat delayed, because of a press of other work demanding attention; but it is now presented to the public, with the assurance that, in many important respects, it excels the former:

Slight changes have been made in some few hymns, and many popular spiritual songs have been added, and it is confidently believed the improvement will be regarded with favor. The size of the book has also been increased, without any additional cost to the purchaser; and the thousands in the West who have used the "Harp" with so much pleasure and profit will be pleased to learn that henceforth the supply will be equal to the demand.

The book has been found to be a most valuable aid to devotion, in private and public, especially in the social and prayer-meeting circles; and, for this purpose, our large city churches, as well as those in the country, have

supplied themselves with copies by the dozen, or by the hundred, until it has now become to be looked upon as a standard book for the place it was intended to fill. Competent judges have pronounced it superior to most, or all, books of the kind now before the public. Great care has been taken to guard against the admission of any hymn or song containing unsound or questionable theology, as well as against everything of a trifling or irreverent character. ST. LOUIS, 1859.

PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION.

This work was compiled, and the first edition published, in 1855. That edition, though large, was soon exhausted, and in 1859 another and a still larger edition was issued, and that, large as it was, was entirely exhausted by 1862. Since then it has not been convenient to publish a third edition until now. The work has been thoroughly revised and many popular pieces added, and, being stereotyped, a supply will hereafter be constantly kept on hand.

It is the present design to publish soon a sup- . plement to the "Harp," which, with additional songs, will also contain a choice selection of music adapted to the songs herein contained. ST. LOUIS, January, 1867.

AWAKENING AND INVITING.

8, 8, 6.

WAK'D by Sinai's awful sound,

A My soul in guilt and thrall I found,

I knew not what to do; O'erwhelmed with guilt, with anguish slain, The sinner must be born again, Or sink in endless wo.

2 Amaz'd I stood, but could not tell Which way to shun the gates of hell, For death and hell drew near;

I strove, indeed, but strove in vain;
"The sinner must be born again,"
Still sounded in my ear.

3 Then to the law I trembling fled,
It poured its curses on my head,
I no relief could find;
This fearful truth I found remain,
"The sinner must be born again,'

[ocr errors]

O'erwhelm'd my troubled mind.

4 Again did Sinai's thunder roll, And guilt lay heavy on my soul, A vast unwieldy load:

Alas! I found and heard it plain, "The sinner must be born again," Or drink the wrath of God.
