"There is no danger of our knowing too much of the true Philosophy of Living," and though many other writers have published books upon the subject, there are none that combine so much of sound observation, good practical sense, and true philosophy, as this one. The popularity of the work in England is shown by its having gone through three editions. It is the most thorough treatise on the various temperaments, food, drink, exercise, sleep, bathing, dress, &c., that we have ever met with; and, along with sound directions for preserving physical health, is a chapter on the Health of the Mind, which deserves especial attention."- Bulletin.

PREFACE.

FOLLOWING in the footsteps of Drs. James Johnson, Andrew Combe, A. T. Thomson, Mayo, and Southwood Smith, we have added another volume to the popular works on health; but with this difference-that while our distinguished predecessors have had principally in view the health and diseases of Man, we have devoted our chief attention to the constitution and affections which are peculiar to Woman. As there exists no work on this subject, the present volume is intended to supply the desideratum, and we trust, therefore, that, notwithstanding deficiencies, it may be found acceptable.

EDWARD JOHN TILT.
