EARLY in the Center of the Deffe is elegantly repelented MOVERYA, under the Character of the GENVUS of the Naw LONDON MAGAZINE, pooring to the Wer, and recommending to Youth, Manhood, and venerable ne Art, a Vinery moran Subjects, Ligny mece Tary for their Kanwadgy, Infrafice, and Enterconned. In The Foreground are fewn emblematic Figures of a Cormatia, & Hern of Fienty, pouring forth the Fruits of the various Pers of the WORLD at the Fest of Minerua-a young Stite or Ska—the Implements of War thrown down, the broken Stear, Currd, Bucker or Shield, and Heimos-and the Bale of Goods, Caff, Giste, Mariner's Compet, and Shining, allude to Merchandize, Navigation, Matheman, &c. &c.. The We pack denotes the Raple Commodity of the Moropolis of Landon. The Lice holding a Gishe, and feated on a Praefal infcribed to the City, fignifies Stability and the Pre-eminence which Londen bears to every other Fart of the Universe. In the Sky, Mercury is feen carrying a Roll, in which is drawn in Minature a View of that Part of London which is feen from the Thames between the Bridges of Blackfriars and London. The Figure of a Phoenix at the Top of the Plate, jupported by two £ying Herald, indicates the imperfect State and bad Execution of the other Magazines, and the univerfal Complaints which have both in Town and Country prevailed against them;-in Confequence of which, this Now LONDON MAGAZINE has been undertaken by a SoCIETY of public spirited GENTLEMEN, on an improved, general, cheap, and very diratie Plan.

The King's Arms, at the Bottom of the Prim, is our PUBLISHER'S Sign, and points out that Authority and datingulhed Sarees by which he putlibes this FAVOURITE Monthly Publication

Το Our CORRESPONDENTS.

EVERAL of our Correfpondents having called upon us to give our Rea fons

may be proper, in Reply, to make the following Obfervations.

Firft, The Multiplicity of Articles with which we have been favoured, and which could not poffibly be inferted for Want of Room, has obliged us to defer many of them to the prefent and future Opportunities.

Secondly, There is a certain Caution neceffary in the Choice of Subjects to prefent before the Public, which even our Correfpondents muft allow us to exercise, in Order to preferve our own Reputation; and this Caution likewife implies an Attention to the Credit of our refpeftive Contributors. It affords us no Satisfaction to point out the Defects of an untutored Pen, which too often throws a Damp on the first Efforts of Genius: We with rather to afft than confound: And if at any Time we have been compelled to reject the hafty Productions of an uninformed Mind, we doubt not but the riper Judgment of the Authors of fuch Effufions, upon mature Reflection, will themlelves juftify our

Conduct.

Thirdly, Whatever may be fuppofed to engage the public Attention, must ever have the Preference to Subjects of a more partial Nature; and our Attention to this, we conceive, fo far from being a juft Matter of Complaint, is a diftinguishing Merit in the New LONDON MAGAZINE, which ferves to recommend it amongst all Ranks and Degrees of Men; who, in confulting this ufeful and entertaining Repolitory, cannot fail to felect, from the endless Variety of it's Contents, many Portions fuited to their every Taste, and administer to the intellectual Gratification of all.

The Modern Cenfor, by P. H. E. will be given in our next.

The Acroftic, by J. K.Verfes on Pleafure, by B. B. being too incorrect, would reflect but little Honour on their respective Authors, if publifhed.

The Pieces communicated by S. Livefley, are under Confideration.

Sapho's Caution against Drunkennels is intended for Infertion; but his short Elay on Affliction is put afide as containing but little Inftruction. As to this Correfpondent's embarraffed Situation in Regard to his Fair-One, we advife him to break the Ice at once, and then he muft either fink or swim.

The Favours of A. B. C. D.-Philofophus--Algebraicus, &c. &c. are received. As to Mr. X. he has just taken the proper Steps to prevent his Performance from appearing, by neglecting to pay the Poftage.

This Day is Published, No. VII. being the SUPPLEMENT Vol. I. Embellished with, 1. An elegant Portrait of CHARLES III. the prefent King of Spain, 2. A fine Portrait of the celebrated HENRY ST. JOHN, Lord Viscount Bolingbroke, &c.3. An admirable Portrait of that eminent Circumnavigator, the late Capt. JAMES COOK, F. R. S. &c.

PREF A CE.

THE

'HE extraordinary and unprecedented Succefs which has attended the Sale of the feven preceding Numbers which form the First Volume of THE NEW LONDON MAGAZINE, calls aloud for the most grateful Acknowledgments of the EDITORS and PROPRIE TOX, who, animated afresh by fuch diftinguished Marks of univerfal Approbation from a generous and difcerning PUBLIC, are determined to fpare neither Pains nor Expence, to render their useful and entertaining MISCELLANY the only complete Monthly Repository of Science and Literature.

It has been our uniform and conflant Object to felect fuch PIECES, in Profe and Verfe, as we conceived to be of real and effential Value, and which, from their acknowledged Merit, could not fail to inform the Underflanding, excite the Affections, and delight the Imagination. We have NOT indulged the licentious Spirit of Diffipation and modern Gallantry, nor have we encouraged the dangerous Sallies of depraved Wit, however fpecious it's Appearance; but have rather confidered ourfelves as peculiarly called upon, by the Exigency of the Times, to become the Protectors of Innocence, the Scourge of Detraction, and the avowed Promoters of rational Knowledge and Entertainment.

This is the Line of Conduct we have hitherto invariably purfued; and fuch has been the Encouragement and Support with which our numerous Subfcribers and Correfpondents have honoured the NEW LONDON MAGAZINE, that we cannot with-hold our most hearty Congratulations on their having raised this favourite Performance already to fo high a Pitch of literary Fame, as to eclipfe others of a fimilar Nature, and bid Defiance to the little Arts of envious Competitors. While other periodical Publications are daily finking in the public Efleem, and fondly courting that Oblivion which is the juft Reward of their Demerits, it must be a pleafing Confideration to
