as "ever the upright statesman." He was born at Kinderhook Landing (Stuyvesant)
New York, December 14, 1795, and
died at Paris, France, November 8, 1858. He was appointed in 1824 a Commissioner to Revise the
Statute Laws of the State of New York. He was Attorney-General of the United States from 1833
to 1838 during the administrations of ANDREW JACKSON and MARTIN VAN BUREN, and for a part of
that period he was also Secretary of War. On more than one occasion, while he was Attorney.
General, he sustained THE TREATY-MAKING POWER OF THE UNITED STATES
of that august tribunal.
