statement of the causes to which the distinctive temper and form of last century literature are to be ascribed. The rise of the periodical essay, and of the novel in particular, seems to us to be due almost entirely to such causes. The book is disfigured by numerous errors of the press.

According to the Authorized Version, in Phonetic Spelling. For a First Reading Book. Square 16mo, pp. 118. New York: Funk & Wagnalls. 1882.

How far it excels the methods proposed by others, we are not sufficiently versed in details to express an opinion. We are prepared, like good Catholics, to accept the decisions of the best "center of unity" that can be established.

We expect to furnish a full Review Article of this book by an amply competent hand.
