OUR COUNCIL OF FRIENDS FOR 1881. President. The Right Hon. the EARL of SHAFTESBURY, K.G. Hon. Secretary and General Superintendent of the Bible-women and Bible women Nurses. Mrs. H. SELFE LEONARD. THE DOUBLE ELEMENT IN BIBLE MISSIONS. In the December number of the magazine, under the head of "The Year's Retrospect," a short summary was given of the work of the Mission during the year 1880. Those of our friends who will take the trouble not only to read the report, but to examine the forest of figures, more especially the financial statement on pages 368 and 370, will, B it is hoped, be satisfied with the results of the first year's working in the new premises. The experience of the last twelve months has still further justified the decision of the Council, and proved that the work is now carried on, not only with less expenditure of time and strength, but with a decided decrease in the amount of working expenses, and when to this last fact may be added another-namely an increase to our number, of six Bible-women and fifteen Lady Superintendents-the hope may be cherished that the Mission has recovered from the temporary check which would naturally follow on the loss of its founder; and that based on the same time-honoured principles, and keeping close to the lines laid down from the beginning, it may still do as good work in the future as it has done in the past, and be, under God, the blessed means of bringing many and many a poor wanderer home to the many mansions of the Father's kingdom. N. R. many years ago. The experience of those same years has but added to the conviction that the double element is absolutely necessary if the work is to be efficiently carried on. The Biblewoman, belonging as she does to the very class she seeks to aid, can speak with authority, for has she not herself known poverty, and care, and trial, and temptation? and if now she is to a certain degree raised above these, can she not point to the Word of God brought home by the power of His grace to her heart as the means which have enabled her to fight and to overcome? On the other hand, if the Bible-woman is to go from house to house, and carry with her the ever-growing weight of her poor sisters' sorrows and sins, she must have someone to whom she can unburthen herself, and on whose ready sympathy and help she can always depend, one who, while she is giving the willing labour of her hands, will employ the power of her |
