Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1873 By P. O'SHEA,

In the Office of the Librarian of Congros, at Washington.

PREFA.CE.

THE intention of the author in preparing this volums for the use of schools, is to confine himself strictly to what is really useful and interesting to the learner. The treatise on elocution is very easy and intelligible, and explains the inflections of the voice very clearly. The treatise on gesture is short; but it is believed to comprise all that is essential. The collection of pieces for reading and declamation are strictly adapted to that purpose. The best specimens of pulpit eloquence, from St. Chrysostom to Lacordaire; the st manly, moving, and impassioned efforts of the tribune, from Demosthenes to O'Counell; the most effective and persuasive triumphs of the forum, from Cicero to Curran, will be found embodied in the ORATORICAL CLASS-BOOK. The Dialogues, both grave and humorous, are such as Christian youth

may speak, and polite and intelligent people may listen to without ennui or disgust.

The author hopes and trusts that the work, on the whole, will be found well suited for use in schools and seminaries
