BETTINGS AT TATTERSALL'S. - SEPTEMBER 24. The bettings yesterday were of very slight importance, there being only two horses backed, Glenorchy at 20 to 1, and Perseus at 30 to 1, the speculators being principally occupied in settling the Doncaster accounts. At Doncaster much activity prevailed, and a good stroke of business was transacted, the Jersey Stable, as usual, establishing itself as “ Premier," by supporting the “ crack," Muley Ishmael, at 17 to 1. We waited till the last minute for the “ Tournament at Eglinton Castle," and can only impute its non-arrival to some “untoward” accident, having received a notice from a valued Correspondent who never disappointed us that it should be forwarded in time. The only consolation we have under the circumstance is, that as the attempt at the “revival of chivalry” was unfortunately a failure from the unpropitious state of the weather, it is of less importance, and its postponement has enabled us to give several articles of interest, which must otherwise have stood over for another month. “ How to buy a Horse,” by AN AMATEUR, will be continued in the ensuing Number. We should be happy to give a Half-pay Officer” and “ X. Y. Z” the information they require ; but, if we had the means, their application-the one as to the best locality for Salmon-fishing in England, and the other for the privilege of Grouse-shooting in Scotland, and both at a low figurecomes too late for this season. T. M. M.'s “ verses” are unfortunately destroyed : if he did not value them sufficiently to keep a copy of them, it is not to be supposed that we should. Our silence respecting copies of articles sent us, after the succeeding publication to their receipt, must be taken as a negative to their insertion. Cricketing Companions” shall appear in our next Number. GENERAL Chasse shall appear at our earliest convenience, TO THE NINETEENTH VOLUME.SECOND SERIES. ANECDOTES :--Of Billy Pearce, 18.
