He is alfo Deputy Paymafter at Quebec, for which he receives an allowance of 11. 10s. a day, paid to him by virtue of the King's warrant, and no other salary, fee, or gratuity whatever; he executes that office by a deputy, who is paid by him, and does not, that he knows of, receive any fee or gratuity whatever.

THE EXAMINATION of John Adam Frederick Heffe, efq. Ledger-keeper in the Office of the Paymaster-general of the Forces; taken upon Oath, October 12, 1781.

THIS Examinant faith, that he is ledger-keeper in the office of the Paymaftergeneral of the Forces; that he receives from the Paymaster-general a falary of 100l. a year; he also receives from the Computer of off-reckonings 8ol. a year, and from the Cafhier of half pay 100l. a year. The firft of thefe falaries has been usually paid the Ledger-keeper, ever fince he knew the office, which is about forty years; the two latter were first paid to Mr. Nichols, when he was appointed Ledger keeper; he fucceeded Mr. Nichols in that office, and the fame payments have been continued to him.

He receives from the agents a fee of 21. 25. a year, for adjusting and giving a certificate of the accounts of each British and foreign regiment, at the time of their clearings; and from fome of the perfons who apply, either for certificates, or receipts on dormant warrants, fees to a fmall amount. He pays taxes for his office, amounting to 151. a year, which being deducted from the fum of 6741. 16s. leaves the fum of 6591. 168. which was the total fum received by him for the profits of this office for the year 1780.

He was appointed Ledger-keeper by Mr. Charles Townshend, who gave him leave, by reafon of his infum ftate of health, to execute this office by Deputy, which he has done ever fince; his daily attendance for many years in the office had impaired his eye-fight, and difqualified him from writing. He pays to his Deputy, 8ol. a year, and to another Affiftant, 50l a year.

APPENDIX. No. XVIII.

THE EXAMINATION of Thomas Bangham, efq. Computer of Offreckonings in the Office of the Paymaster-general of the Forces; taken upon Oath, August 30, 1781.

THIS Examinant faith, That his Office is the Computer of the Off-reckonings in the Office of the Paymaster-general of the Forces: That for this Office he receives from the Paymafter-general a falary of 8ol. a year, without deduction; but he has always, fince he has been in this department, which is about fix years, paid the whole of this falary to the ledger-keeper, finding it had been the ufual practice of his predeceffors, as far back as Lord Holland's time; the reafon of which, as he apprehends, is because otherwife the profits of the office of Ledger-keeper would not be equivalent to the trouble attending it. The real profits of his office arife from the following fees and gratuities: 5s. 3d. per cent. for fettling, and adjusting, and making out receipts for the half yearly iffues of off-reckonings; this is paid him by the Clothier at the time of the issue. 75. for the entry of each affignment, 13s. 6d. for the entry of each warrant ; these are paid him by the Clothiers at the time of the entry; 11. is. for every certificate of the fum that has been paid upon any affignment; this is paid him by the perfon applying. An annual payment from the agents of regiments, of 31. 35. for each of thofe regiments ferving abroad, for which stoppage receipts are iffued. Thefe fees or gratuities are paid by the ufage of this office, and have continued the fame ever fince he has been acquainted with the business. He has no other profits whatever for the discharge of his office, except what are above mentioned; the fum total of which, for the year 1780, amounted to 10381. 5s. 6d. and no more. To the best of his knowledge and belief, in time of peace, the profits of his office, upon an average, do not exceed 400l. a year.

THIS Examinant faith, That he has been in the Office of the Paymafter-general of the Forces above forty two years, and has been Cashier and paymaster of the Half pay ever fince May 1753. All the profits of his office arife from a falary and fees; the falary is 80l. a year, paid to him, without deduction, by the Paymaster-general; his fees arife from the bufinef's done. He receives from each officer two fhillings for himself, and fix pence for his clerk, for every half yearly payment; and three fhillings and fix pence for receiving and entering 4 every

every warrant placing the officer or officers, if more than one, on the half pay lift; and from the perfon producing them, three fhillings and fix pence for the entry of every power of attorney and probate of a will. Thefe are the ufual customary fees which have been paid to the Cashier of half pay ever fince he has known the office. The fum total received by him for the profits of this office, in the year 1780, amounted to 6971. 5s out of which he paid to the Ledger-keeper 100l. and 141. taxes for the one fhilling duty. Lord Holland, about the year 1764, directed him, by letter, to pay to the Ledger-keeper 100l. a year out of the income of his office; which payment he has made ever fince.

THIS Examinant faith, That he is Entering Clerk in the office of the Paymafter-general of the forces, from whom he receives a falary of 60l. a year, which he believes is the falary that has been usually paid to the Entering Clerk.
