Sventolando il bel crine all' aura sciolto,
Ricadea sulle guance in nembo d'oro ;
V'accorean gli amoretti, e dal bel volto
Quinci, e quindi il partian con le man loro;
E de fiori onde intorno avean raccolto
Pieno il grembo, tessean vago lavoro,
Alla fronte ghirlanda, al piè gentile
E alle braccia catene, e al sen monile..

E talor pareggiando all' amorosa
Bocca, o peonia, o anemone vermiglio,
E alla pulita guancia, o giglio, o rosa,
La peonia perdea, la rosa, e 'l giglio
Taceano il vento, e l' onda, e dall'erbosa
Piaggia non si sentia mover bisbiglio;
L'aria, l' acqua, e la terra in varie forme
Parean tacendo dire: Ecco Amor dorme.

CAN

Spread to the gale, by every zephyr blown,
Dark o'er his cheeks his burnith'd locks were thrown;
Th'obsequious Loves those ftraggling locks replace,
That oft returning veil'd his heav'nly face :
From the fresh flow'rs that thickly grew beneath,
Chaplets they wove, and many a fragrant wreath,
Sweet garlands to adorn that form design'd,
And with fantastic folds each beauteous limb to bind.

Oft to his lips would the disporting crew
Compare the piony's vermilion hue;
Oft to his cheek the rose and lily's bloom
But pion, rose and lily were o'ercome.
The winds and waves were hush'd in dead repose,
And not a whisper on the plain arose :
Earth, water, air, accordant all confeft,
And filent seem'd to say, the God of Love's at rest.
