HE fhining taper's chearful light

THE

Attracts the infant's wand'ring eyes:

He ftands inraptur'd at the fight,
And for the trembling fplendor fighs.

Fancy's beguiling pow'r difplays.

A thousand pleasures there combin'd; But should he touch th' alluring blaze, Too foon the fond mistake he'll find.

Fain would th' extended hand retire,
But hopes of welcome ease are vain ;
For though it fhuns the treach'rous fire,

It muft its torment's load retain.

Quanto mè finger fan pittori induftri;

Con bionda chioma lunga et annodata,
Oro non è, che più risplenda, o luftri.
Spargeafi per la guancia delicata
Mifto color di rose, e di liguftri,
Di terfo avorio era la fronte lieta
Che lo spazio finia con giufta meta.
