The net earnings for the 7,014.95 miles reported were $1,654.45 per mile of road.

The gross earnings for the year ending June 30, 1884, were.....$35,735,271.85 The operating expenses for the year ending June 30, 1884.

Leaving the net earnings.....

The net earnings for the 7,249.25 miles reported, were $1,722.22 per mile of road. The operating expenses for the year were an increase over the former year of $423,465.53; the earnings increased $1,301,917.08, or the net earnings over the former year were $878,

451.55.

The earnings in Iowa of the St. Louis, Keokuk & Northwestern have fallen off $69,812.53; of the Illinois Central, $66,522.11; of the Minneapolis & St. Louis, $84,387.16; of the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific, $1,245,611.70; of the Burlington & Northwestern, $4,017.98; the other roads show a reasonable increase. We presume that there is an error in the returns from the Wabash road, as the falling off is too great. The probabilities are that last year's report of this road covered lines not in this State, and was incorrect.

PERCENTAGE OF OPERATING EXPENSES TO EARNINGS.

The roads showing the lowest percentage of operating expenses to earnings, were the Ottumwa & Kirkville, 41; Iowa Northern, 53; Illinois Central, 56; Milwaukee & St. Paul, 58; Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific, 59; Chicago & Northwestern, 60; Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, 60; Kansas City, St. Jo & Council Bluffs, 62; Sioux City & Pacific, 61.

The highest percentage of net earnings to capital stock and debt was the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, 7; Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific, 6.90; Chicago & Northwestern, 6.92.

Twenty-four roads show an excess after deducting operating expenses, interest and rental, of $6,953,935.56; eight roads show a deficit after making these deductions, of $750,455.34, which, deducted, leaves $6,203,480.22 as the total net earnings to the stockholders, of all the roads in Iowa. The Burlington & Western cost to operate, $6,242.80 more than its entire income.
