Upon the holy-dayes (if there be no communion) shall be faid all that is appointed at the communion, untill the end of the homily, concluding with the generall prayer (for the whole eftate of Chrifts church militant here in earth) and one or moe of these collects before rehearsed, as occafion fhall ferve.

And there shall be no celebration of the Lords Supper, except there be a good number to communicate with the priest, according to his difcretion.

[ocr errors]

And if there be not above twentie perfons in the parish, of difcretion to receive the communion, yet there fhall be no communion, except foure or three at the least communicate with the priest.

And in cathedrall and collegiat churches, where be many priests and deacons, they shall all receive the communion with the minifter every funday at the leaft, except they have a reasonable caufe to the contrarie.

T

And to take away the fuperftition, which any perfon bath or might have in the bread and wine, it shall fuffice that the bread befuch as is ufually to be eaten at the table with other meats, but the best and purest wheat bread that conveniently may be gotten. And if any of the bread or wine remain, the curate shall have it to his own use.

The bread and wine for the communion, fhall be provided by the curate and the churchwardens,at the charges of the parish, and the parifh fhall be difcharged of fuch fummes of money, or other duties, which bitherto they have payed for the fame by order of their houfes every funday.

And note that every parishioner shall communicate at the least three times in the yeare,of which Easter to be one;and fhall alfo receive the facraments, and other rites, according to the order in this book appointed. And yearly at Eafier, every parishioner shall reckon with his parfon, vicar, or curate, or his or their deputy or deputies,& pay to them or bim all ecclefiafticall duties, accuftomably due then, and at that time to be payed.

The ministration of baptifme to be used in the church.

It appeareth by ancient writers, that the facrament of baptifme in the old time was not commonly miniftred, but at two times in the yeare, at Easter and whitfuntide. At which times it was openly miniftred in the prefence of all the congregation. which cuftome now being grown out ofufe (although it cannot for many confiderations be well restored again) it is thought good to follow the fame, as neare as conveniently may be. wherefore the people are to be admonished, that it is most convenient that baptifme should not be miniftred but upon fundayes and other holydayes, when the most number of people may come together, as well for that the congregation there prefent may teftifie the receiving of them that be newly baptized, into the number of Chrifts church, as alfo because in the baptifme of infants, every man prefent may be put in remembrance of his own profeffion made to God in his baptifme. For which caufe alfo it is expedient that ba ptifme be miniftred in the English tongue. Nevertheleffe (if neceffitie fo require) children may at all times be baptized at home.

when there are children to be baptized upon the funday or holy-day,the parents fhall give knowledge over night, or in the morning afore the beginning of morning prayer, to the curate. And then the godfathers, godmothers, and people, with the children, must be readie at the font, either immediately after the laft Leffon at morning prayer, or else immediately after the last leffon at evening prayer, as the curate by his difcretion fhall appoint. And then standing there, the priest fhall ask whether the children be baptized or no. If they answer, No: then shall the priest fay thus,

Then fhall the priest fay,
Heare the words of the gofpel written by
Saint Mark in the tenth chapter.
A Chrift that he should touch them:
Ta certain time they brought children
and his difciples rebuked thofe that brought
them. But when Jefus faw it,he was difpleafed,
and faid unto them, Suffer little children to
come unto me,and forbid them not, for to fuch

unto you, Whofoever doth not receive the
kingdome of God as a little childe, he fhall
not enter therein. And when he had taken
them up in his arms, he put his hands upon
them, and bleffed them.

After the gospel is read, the minister fhall
mak this brief exhortation upon the words
of the gospel.

For our Saviour Chrift, that he commanded
Riends, you heare in this gofpel the words
the children to be brought unto him: how he
blamed those that would have kept them from
him: how he exhorted all men to follow their
innocencie. You perceive how by his outward
gefture and deed, he declared his good will to-
ward them. For he embraced them in his
arms, he laid his hands upon them, and bleffed
shem. Doubt ye not therefore, but earnestly

beleeve, that he will likewife favourably re ceive these prefent infants, that he will embrace them with the arms of his mercie, that he will give unto them the bleffing of eternall life, and make them partakers of his everlafting kingdome. Wherefore, we being thus perfwaded of the good will of our heavenly Father toward thefe infants, declared by his Sonne Jefus Chrift, and nothing doubting but that he favourably alloweth this charitable work of ours, in bringing these children to his holy baptifme, let us faithfully and devoutly give thanks unto him, and say,

A Father, we give thee humble thanks, that

Lmightie and everlafting God, heavenly thou haft vouchsafed to call us to the knowledge of thy grace, and faith in thee: increase this knowledge, and confirm this faith in us evermore: give thy holy Spirit to thefe infants, that they may be born again, and be made heirs of everlafting falvation, through our Lord Jefus Chrift, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the holy Spirit, now and for

ever. Amen.

Ye have heard an his golpel, to grant all these things that yo alfo that our Lord Jefus Chrift hath promifed have prayed for, which promife he for his part will molt furely keep and perform. Wherefore after this promife made by Chrift, these infants must also faithfully for their part promife by you that be their furettes, that they will forfake the devil and all his works, and conftantly beleeve Gods holy word, and obe diently keep his commandments.

Then fhall the priest demand of the godfathers and godmothers thefe questions follow ing.

their life according to this beginning.

Then fhall be faid,

Then shall the priest fay,

Ee yeeld thee heartie thanks, moft mer cifull Father, that it hath pleafed thee to regenerate this infant with thy holy Spirit, to receive him for thine own childe by adoption, and to incorporate him into thy holy congregation: and humbly we beseech thee to grant, that he being dead unto finne, and living unto righteousneffe, and being buried with Chrift in his death, may crucifie the old man, and utterly abolish the whole bodie of finne, that as he is made partaker of the death of thy Sonne, fo he may be partaker of his refurre&tion: fo that finally, with the refidue of thy holy congregation, he may be inheritour of thine everlafting kingdome, through Christ our Lord. At thelaft end the priest calling the godfathers and godmothers together, fhall fay this exhortation following.

The papours and curates fall often admonish the people, that they deferre not the baptifme of infants any longer then the funday, or other holyday next after the childe be born, unlesse upon a great and reasonable caufe declared to the curate, and by him approved.

And also they shall warn them, that without great caufe and neceffitie they procure not their children to be baptized at home in their houses. And when great need fhall compell them so to do, then baptifme fhall be adminiftred on this fashion.

First, let the lawfull minifter, and them that be prefent, call upon God for his grace, and fay the Lords prayer, if time will fuffer. And then the childe being named by fome one that is prefent, the faid lawfull minifter shall dip it in water, or poure water upon it, saying these words.

Baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Sonne, and of the holy Ghost. Amen. And let them not doubt, but that the childe fo baptized, is lawfully and fufficiently baptized, and ought not to be baptized again. But yet nevertheleffe, if the childe which is after this fort baptized, do afterward live, it is expedient that it be brought into the church, to the intent that if the priest or minifter of the same parish did himself baptize that cbilde, the congregation may be certified of the true form of baptifme by bim private ly before used. Or if the childe were baptized by any other lawfull minifter, that then the minifter of the parish, where the childe was born or Cbriftened, ball examine and try, whether the childe be lawfully baptized or no. In which cafe if those that bring any childe to the church, do answer that the fame childe is already baptized; then fball the minifter examine them further, faying,

By whom was the childe baptized? Who was prefent when the childe was baptized?

And because fome things effentiall to this facrament may happen to be omitted through fear or hafte in fuch times of extremitie: therefore I demand further of you,

With what matter was the childe baptized?

With what words was the childe baptized? Whether think you the childe to be lawfully and perfeâly baptized?

And if the minister fhall finde by the anfwers of fuch as bring the childe, that all things were done as they ought to be: then Shall not be Christen the childe again, but fball receive him as one of the flock of the true Chriftian people, faying thus.

Certifie you, done, and according unto due order, concerning the baptizing of this childe, which being born in originall finne, and in the wrath of God, is now by the laver of regeneration in baptifme, received into the number of the children of God, and heirs of everlasting life.
