I Require and charge you, (as you will anfwer at the dreadfull day of judgement, when the fecrets of all hearts fhall be difclofed) that if either of you do know any impediment why ye may not be lawfully joyned together in matrimonie, that ye confeffe it. At which day of marriage, if any man do alledge & declare any impediment, why they may not be coupled together in matrimonie by Gods law or the laws of this realm, and will be bound, and fufficient fureties with him to the parties, or elfe put in a caution to the full value of fuch charges as the perfons to be married do fustain, to prove his allegation, then the folemnization must be deferred unto fuch time as the truth be tried. Then fhall they again loofe their hands, and the man fhall give unto the woman a ring, laying the fame upon the book, with the accustomed duty to the priest and clerk. And the priest taking the ring, fhall deliver it unto the man to put it upon the fourth finger of the womans left hand. And the man taught by the priest shall fay.

Then fhall the prieft say.

Lmighty God, which at the beginning did create our first parents Adam and Eve, and did fan&tifie and joyn them together in marriage, poure upon you the riches of his grace, fanctifie and bleffe you, that ye may please him both in body and soul, and live to gether in holy love unto your lives end. Amen.

Then fhall begin the communion. And after the gospel fhall be faid a fermon, wherein ordinarily (fo oft as there is any marriage) the office of man and wife shall be declared, ac cording to holy fcripture. Or if there be no fermon, the minifer shall reade this that followeth.

Ll ye which be married, or which inArend to take the holy cftate of matrimony upon you, heare what holy fcripture doth fay as touching the duty of husbands towards their wives, and wives towards their husbands.

S.Paul in his epiftle to the Ephefians the fifth chapter, doth give this commandment to all married men: Ye husbands, love your wives, even as Chrift loved the church and hath given himself for it, to fanctifie it, purging it in the fountain of water, through the word, that he might make it unto himself a glorious congregation, not having fpot or wrinkle, or any fuch thing, but that it should be holy and blamele fle. So men are bound to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife, loveth himself. For never did any man hate his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord doth the congregation: for we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this caufe fhill a man leave father and mother, and fhall be joyned unto his wife,

and they two fhall be one flesh. This mystery is great, but I fpeak of Chrift, and of the congregation. Neverthele ffe, let every one of you fo love his own wife, even as himself.

Likewife the fame Saint Paul writing to the Col. 3.19. Coloffians, fpeaketh thus to all men that be married: Yemen, love your wives, and be not bitter unto them.

Heare also what Saint Peter the apostle of 1.Pet. 3.7. Chrift, which was himself a married man, faith unto all men that are married: Ye hufbands, dwell with your wives according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker veffel, and as heirs together of the grace of life, fo that your prayers be not hindered.

Hitherto ye have heard the duty of the husband toward the wife. Now likewise ye wives, heare and learn your duties towards your husbands, even as it is plainly set forth in holy fcripture.

S. Paul (in the forenamed epiftle to the Ephef.5.22. Ephefians) teacheth you thus: Ye women, to veile 25, fubmit your felves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the wives head, even as Chrift is the head of the church, and he is also the Saviour of the whole body.

Therefore as the church or congregation is fubject unto Chrift:fo likewife let the wives alfo be in fubjection unto their own husbands in all things. And again he faith, Let the wife reverence her husband. And (in his epiftle to the Coloffians) S.Paul giveth you this fhort Col.3.1 3. leffon: Ye wives, fubmit your felves unto your own husbands, as it is convenient in the Lord.

S. Peter alfo doth inftruct you very godly, 1.Pet. 3.1.. thus faying, Let wives be fubje&t to their own to verfe 7. husbands, fo that if any obey not the word, they may be wonne without the word, by the converfation of the wives, while they behold your chafte converfation coupled with fear: Whofe apparell let it not be outward, with broyded hair, and trimming about with gold, either in putting on of gorgeous apparell: but: let the hid man which is in the heart, be without all corruption, fo that the fpirit be milde and quiet, which is a precious thing in the fight of God. For after this manner (in the old time) did the holy women which trufted in God, apparell themfelves, being fubject to their own husbands, as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord, whofe daughters ye are made, doing well, and not being difmayed with any fear.

The new married perfons the fame day of their marriage must receive the holy com

Minister.

Lord look down from heaven, behold, OVE vifit and relieve this thy fervant. Look upon him with the eyes of thy mercy, give him comfort and fure confidence in thee, defend him from the danger of the enemy, and keep him in perpetuall peace and fafetie, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eare us, Almighty and most mercifull Hood and Saviour, extend thy accustomed goodne fe to this thy fervant, which is grieved with fickneffe: vifit him, O Lord,as thou didst vifit Peters wives mother, and the captains fervant. So vifit and reftore to this fick perfon his former health (if it be thy will) or elfe

give him grace fo to take thy vifitation, that after this painfull life ended, he may dwell with thee in life everlafting. Amen.

Then shall the minifter exhort the fick perfon after this form, or other like.

Early beloved, know this, that Almighty D God is the Lord of life and death, and over all things to them pertaining, as youth, ftrength, health, age, weakneffe, and fickneffe: wherefore, whatsoever your fickneffe is, know you certainly that it is Gods vifitation. And for what cause foever this ficknesse is fent unto you, whether it be to trie your patience for the example of other, and that your faith may be found in the day of the Lord, laudable, glorious, and honourable, to the increase of glory and endleffe felicitie; or else it be fent unto you to corre& and amend in you whatfoever doth offend the eyes of your heavenly Father: Know you certainly, that if you truly repent you of your finnes, and bear your fickneffe patiently, trufting in Gods mercy, for his deare Sonne Jefus Chrifts fake, and render unto him humble thanks for his fatherly vifitation, fubmitting your felf wholly unto his will, it fhall turn to your profit, and help you forward in the right way that leadeth unto everlasting life.

If the perfon vifited be very fick, then the curate may end his exhortation in this place.

Take therefore in good worth the chastisement of the Lord: for whom the Lord loveth, he chastiseth; yea, as S. Paul faith, he fcourgeth every fonne which he receiveth. If ye endure chastisement, he offereth himself unto you, as unto his own children. What fonne is he that the Father chaftifeth not? If ye be not under correction (whereof all true children children. Therefore feeing that when our are partakers) then are ye baftards and not carnall fathers do correct us, we reverently obey them, hall we not now much rather be obedient to our fpirituall Father, and fo live? And they for a few dayes do chaftife us, after their own pleafure: but he doth chaftife us for our profit, to the intent he may make us partakers of his holineffe. Thefe words (good brother) are Gods words, and written in holy fcripture for our comfort and inftruction, that we should patiently and with thanksgiving bear our heavenly Fathers correction, whenfoever by any manner of adverfitie it shall please his gracious goodneffe to visit us. And there

should

fhould be no greater comfort to Christian

perfons, then to be made like unto Chrift, by fuffering patiently adverfities, troubles, and ficknefles. For he himself went not up to joy, but firft he suffered pain;he entred not into his glory, before he was crucified: So truly our way to eternall joy, is to suffer here with Chrift; and our doore to enter into eternall life, is gladly to die with Chrift, that we may rife again from death, and dwell with him in everlasting life. Now therefore taking your fackneffe, which is thus profitable for you, patiently, I exhort you in the name of God, to remember the profeffion which you made unto God in your baptifme. And forafmuch as after this life there is account to be given unto the righteous Judge, of whom all must be judged without refpect of perfons: I require you to examine your felf, and your ftate, both toward God and man, fo that accufing and condemning your felf for your own faults, you may finde mercie at our heavenly Fathers hand for Chrifts fake, and not be ac cused and condemned in that fearfull judgement. Therefore I fhall fhortly rehearse the articles of our faith, that you may know whether you do beleeve as a Chriftian man should, or no.

Here the minifter fhall rehearse the articles of the faith, faying thus,

Doft thou beleeve in God the Father Almightie?

(And fo forth, as it is in baptifme) Then fhall the minifter examine whether he be in charitie with all the world, exhorting bim to forgive from the bottome of his heart all perfons that have offended him, and if be bave offended other, to ask them forgiveneffe, and where he hath done injury or wrong to any man, that he make amends to the uttermoft of bis power. And if he have not afore difpofed his goods, let him then make his will, and alfo declare his debts, what he oweth, and what is owing unto him, for difcharging of bis confcience, and quietneffe of his executours. But men must be oft admonished that they fet an order for their temporall goods and lands, when they be in bealth.

These words before rehearsed, may be faid before the minifter begin his prayer, as he fball fee caufe.

The minister may not forget nor omit to move the fick perfon (and that most earneftly to liberalitie toward the poore. Here fhall the fick perfon make a speciall confeffion, if he feel his confcience troubled with any weightie matter. After which confeffion, the priest shall abfolve him after
