The passage should stand as follows: "They appear to be of silken material, woven into twelfth century patterns, and enriched with gold. This has been laid on the thread before weaving, in at least two different ways. In the two specimens shewn in the plate, the threads have apparently been gilt by applying gold-leaf with some adhesive material. In some very small fragments, strips of gold are twisted round the threads, which have partly decayed and left the solid gold in spiral form. A beautifully preserved stole of about A.D. 1200, in the possession of W. H. D. Longstaffe, Esq., of Gateshead, is ornamented from end to end with labyrinthine patterns in lozenges about 34 inches long, the groundwork between them being entirely overlaid with gold thread made by the latter process."
