* On the 8th of Thermidor, 1794, Robespierre made his famous speech to the Convention. It was the last day of the sanguinary tyranny which had afflicted France. On that day two eminent poets, Roucher, author of Les Mers, and André Chenier, who left admirable compositions, were executed.

+ The Tugenbund was an Association formed in Prussia, soon after the Peace of Tilsit, (7th July, 1807.) It was founded by Stein and Scharnhorst. Its ostensible object was to promote the moral improvement of the people, while it secretly aimed at the liberation of Germany, at all risks, from the grasp of Napoleon.
