Of the following Essays, two - those on Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and on Edward FitzGerald - first appeared in "The Quarterly Review"; one - that on Gray - in "Murray's Magazine"; the study of Cowper in "Macmillan's Magazine"; and that of Gibbon in the "Fortnightly Review." A few slight alterations and corrections have been made in reprinting them. With these exceptions, they are republished in their original form; and, for permission to do this, I am indebted, in the several cases, to the courtesy of Mr. Murray, Messrs.
