4 Nor shall my tongue alone proclaim
The honors of my God;
My life, with all my active powers,
Shall spread thy praise abroad.

all prayers in one,—

When I am wholly thine;

Thy will, my God, thy will be done,
And let that will be mine,

2 All-wise, almighty, and all-good,
In thee I firmly trust;

Thy ways unknown, or understood,
Are merciful and just.

3 May I remember that to thee,
Whate'er 1 have I owe;

And back in gratitude from me,
May all thy bounties flow.

4 Thy gifts are only then enjoyed,
When used as talents lent;
Those talents only well employed,
When in thy service spent.

5 And though thy wisdom takes away,
Shall I arraign thy will?

13.

No, let me bless thy name, and say,
"The Lord is gracious still."

1 How perfect is thy word!
And all thy judgments just!
Forever sure thy promise, Lord,
And men securely trust.

WATTS.

2 My gracious God, how plain
Are thy directions given !
I never read in vain,
But find the path to heaven.

3 I hear thy word with love,
And I would fain obey;

Send thy good Spirit from above,
To guide me, lest I stray.

4 While with my heart and tongue
I spread thy praise abroad,
Accept the worship and the song,
My Savior and my God.

WATTS.

1 SONGS of immortal praise belong
To my almighty God;

He has my heart, and he my tongue,
To spread his name abroad.

2 How great the works his hand hath wrought!
How glorious in our sight!
Good men in every age have sought
His wonders with delight.

3 Nature and time, and earth and skies,
Thy heavenly skill proclaim;
What shall we do to make us wise,
But learn to read thy name?

4 To fear thy power, to trust thy grace,
Is our divinest skill;

And he's the wisest of our race,
That best obeys thy will.

C. M. SPIRIT OF PSALMS.

1 O God, our strength, to thee the song
With grateful hearts we raise;
To thee, and thee alone, belong

All worship, love, and praise.
2 1n trouble's dark and stormy hour
Thine ear hath heard our prayer ;
And graciously thine arm of power
Hath saved us from despair.

3 And thou, O ever gracious Lord,
Wilt keep thy promise still,
If, meekly hearkening to thy word,
We seek to do thy will.

4 Led by the light thy grace imparts,
Ne'er may we bow the knee

To idols, which our wayward hearts
Set up instead of thee.

5 So shall thy choicest gifts, O Lord, ·
Thy faithful people bless;

For them shall earth its stores afford,
And Heaven its happiness.

ANONYMOUS.

1 THROUGH all the various shifting scene
Of life's mistaken ill or good,
Thy hand, O God, conducts unseen
The beautiful vicissitude.

2 Thou givest with paternal care,
Howe'er unjustly we complain,
To all their necessary share

Of joy and sorrow, health and pain.

3 All things on earth, and all in heaven,
On thine eternal will depend:

And all for greater good were given,
Would man pursue the appointed end.

4 Be this my care to all beside
Indifferent let my wishes be;

Passion be calm, and dumb be pride,
And fixed my soul, great God! on thee.

KIPPIS.

1 GREAT GOD! in vain man's narrow view
Attempts to look thy nature through;
Our laboring powers with reverence own
Thy glories never can be known.

2 Not the high seraph's mighty thought,
Who countless years his God has sought,
Such wondrous height or depth can find,
Or fully trace thy boundless mind.

3 And yet thy kindness deigns to show
Enough for mortal minds to know;
While wisdom, goodness, power divine,
Through all thy works and conduct shine.

4 O! may our souls with rapture trace
Thy works of nature and of grace;
Explore thy sacred truth, and still
Press on to know and do thy will.

MONTGOMERY.

1 THE Lord is my shepherd, no want shall I know, I feed in green pastures, safe folded I rest; He leadeth my soul where the still waters flow; Restores me when wandering, redeems when oppressed.

2 Through the valley and shadow of death tho' I stray,

Since thou art my guardian, no evil I fear;

Thy rod shall defend me, thy staff be my stay, No harm can befall, with my Comforter near. 3 In the midst of affliction my table is spread; With blessings unmeasured my cup runneth o'er ;

With perfume and oil thou anointest my head; O what shall I ask of thy providence more?

4 Let goodness and mercy, my bountiful God, Still follow my steps till I meet thee above; I seek, by the path which my forefathers trod Through the land of their sojourn, thy kingdom of love.

[blocks in formation]

1 Lo, my Shepherd's hand divine!
Want shall never more be mine:
In a pasture fair and large
He shall feed his happy charge.

2 When I faint with summer's heat,
He shall lead my weary feet

To the streams that, still and slow,
Through the verdant meadows flow.
