Fly from this upper World, compleat that Vow,
And make a Vifit to the Shades below.

This meant ALEXIS, when with latest Breath,
A Victim falling to the Stroke of Death,
He faid- Hafte to me on the happy Plains,
• Where mighty Love in endless Triumph reigns.
The Trojan Hero, and the Thracian Bard,
Perform'd of Old what Thou reputeft Hard,

Whilft Harp in Hand he lull'd Hell's Tripple-
[beaded Guard;
Why starts my Fair One? Whence proceeds this Paufe?

Like his thy Musick and like his thy Cause.

His Wife he follow'd to the gloomy Space,
Thou thy ALEXIs lock'd in Death's Embrace.
Th' Attempt is worthy of thy tuneful Hands,
Th' Attempt thy much-protefted Grief commands.
He that was all thy Glory, all thy Pride,

In Life, for whom with Pleafure thou'dft have dy'd,
Thro' Death's uncertain Path fhall be thy certain
[Guide.
The willing Pilot waits thee on the Shoar,
And not a Soul with thee fhall ferry o'er.
L

Me

Methinks, I fee thee on the adverse Sand,

And wond'ring Ghofts around thee trembling ftand.

* With Back relaxing and demiffive Ears,
Stern Pluto's fawning Centinel appears;
Demands but Tribute from thy tuneful String,
And he'll fecure thy Paffage to his King.

The Snakes uncurl around the Furies Heads,
Whilft they on Iron reft, as downy Beds.
Nor Thirst, nor Hunger, Tantalus perceives,
Tho' flops the River, he the Water leaves, a
And at his Ears a Feaft of Harmony receives.
No Vulture's Beak Prometheus now does feel,
Nor thou Ixion thy once whirling Wheel..
Go PLORABELLA to Proferpine's Seat,
Embrace her Knees, and proftrate at her Feet,
With thy becoming Grief ALEXIS mourn,

And mediate with her his safe Return.

* Vid. Virgil.

Say

Say- By her bright Example taught to love,

As fhe for Latmos left the Joys above;
So thou forfook'ft the unregarded Light
To feek ALEXIS in the Realms of Night.
When made fo movingly, fhe can't but hear
(Who knew her Sex's Love) her Sex's Pray'r.
If Orpheus cou'd the mighty Grace obtain
To have his dear Eurydice again,

Why fhou'd Defpair thy tim'rous Soul invade?

Who pleads like Orpheus, must like him perfwade. By him too warn'd avoid th' unhappy Fate,

Which, (but in vain) that Thracian mourns too late. Confenting Nod when Proferpine fhall give,

And bid ALEXIS fecond Life receive,

When thou prepar'ft to be again a Bride,
And in Return to Life ALEXIS' Guide,
Till diftant Steps have left the gloomy Space,
Look! look! not back on thy ALEXIS Face,

Left ftrait the dear Refemblance fly thy fond Embrace.

Occafion'd by feeing the LADY's foregoing Poem.

O

Blefs'd departed Youth, whoe'er thou art,

Who thus cou'd move this more than ten-
[der Heart,

Thy Death I envy much, much more I praise
The matchlefs Author of th' immortal Lays.
Sure Love unheard-of touch'd her gen'rous Soul,
That thus cou'd all the Faculties controul;

Enchant each Word, and to fit Numbers rife,
To speak the Dictates of her Thoughts and Eyes,
O! who'd not die by Wracks, or utmost Pain,
To be lamented in fo foft a Strain?

Mufick can Mirth, or Love, nay, Life infuse,
And fure there's Mufick in this heav'nly Muse.
Come then, ye Sifters of the Sacred Choir,
Tune your foft Lutes, and equal Strains infpire,
To the fweet Ecchoes of the tremb'ling String,
That he may raise from Death, and Į her Charms

[may fing.

To a Friend on the Anniversary of his Wed

A

ding! Day.

T laft fet free from Love's fweet Chains,

No more I fing my pleafing Pains ;

Nor Love-fick Lines, in each a Sigh,

With how I mourn, and pine, and die;
An happier Theme I now purfue,
As full of Joy, as full of you.

Come hither all ye am'rous Swains,

Come ev'ry fair One of the Plains,

and you,

Learn to be kind ye Fair; and

Ye Swains, to be for ever true.

Turn here and fee with wond'ring Eyes

A Scene of Joy and Gladness rise.
See Juno from th' Ætherial Dome,

Rejoicing to the Earth is come;

With Dances, Wine, and Sonnets gay

To celebrate the happy Day,
