Tho' like an Eagle, or as Lyncens Ey'd,

(old,

He'd prove too Blind to fee une Caufo for Pride è
For what is Man! Shou'd we with Labour ftrive
To make him great, his Race from Kings derive;
He's but a Statue form'd of Earth, which must
In Time return to Primogeneal Duft.

We find (if Natures Secrets we descry)

KINGS are like Peasants born, like Peasants die,
We find (if we in trueft Light display)

This mighty THING a Bubble ev'ry Way.
Man in himself does fancy'd Merits find,

Man Prides himself that he can ftoutly bear
The rugged Labours of the doubtful War.
That he can move (does much of Merit bring)
To the foft Murmers of the trembling String,
While by the wanton Motions of the Wind
His Locks are wav'd, as light as is his Mind.

He robbs the Beaft, and adds it to his own;
Believes all Worth confifts in Golden Store,

Each Piece a Virtue, and each Pound a Score.

Thus meer imaginary Worth and Pelf,

Bubble the MAN, and cheat him of HIMSELF.

Earth's Conquerors here, and here the Conquer'd lie.
