THOMAS HEYWARD.

As mathematicians, in demonstrating a general truth, employ a particular diagram, the life of Thomas Heyward may be selected to illustrate the purity of design, the selfdevotion, and the enlightened forecast, of the patriots who achieved the independence of the United States of America.

MR. THOMAS HEYWARD, the eldest son of colonel Daniel Heyward, of St. Luke's parish, in the province of South Carolina, was born in the year of our Lord 1746. His father, one of the wealthiest planters in the province, had acquired the greater part of his estate by his sagacity and industry. Though the maker of his own fortune, he did not think that money was every thing; and determined to bestow on his son a more valuable inheritance than the land and slaves which were to descend to him. His wisdom found its reward. By a good education, his son was enabled to render important services to his country, and prepared for that station in the congress of the United States, which has connected the name of Heyward with one of the most memorable acts, not only in the history of the United States, but in that of human nature.
