HE defign of this volume is to point out the THE delicate difference between words reputed fynonymous; that is to fay, the diftinguishing characteristics of fuch words, as refembling each other in their general idea, may nevertheless be diftinguishable one from another by fome additional one, peculiar to each of them. In order to use words with propriety and elegance, there is a choice to be attended to. We must be a little nice upon words, not imagining that fuch as are called fynonymous, are really fo, that is, exactly uniform in their fenfe, and refemble each other as perfectly as two drops of water from the fame fpring for, on a closer examination we shall fee that this refemblance does not take in the whole extent and force of fignification, but confifts only in one principal idea which they all exprefs; each word differing from the other by fome relative |
