Genefis, Chap. 3. v. 1.

Onkelos. AND the ferpent was cunning above every beaft of the

field, which the Lord God had made: and he said unto the woman: Is it of a truth that the Lord hath faid, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Pfeudo-Jonathan. Now the ferpent was wife unto evil above every beaft of the field, which the Lord God had made: and he said to the woman: Is it true that the Lord God hath said, Ye fhall not eat of every tree of the garden?

0. And the woman faid unto the ferpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden, we may eat.

P. J. And the woman faid to the ferpent, Of the rest of the* fruit of the trees of the garden, we have power to cat.

0. But of the fruit of that tree, which is in the midft of the garden,

0. For it is revealed before the Lord, that in the day that ye fhall eat of it, your eyes fhall be opened and ye fhall be as princes, wife to diftinguish between good and evil.

P. J. For it is manifeft before the Lord, that in the day ye fhall eat of it, ye shall be as mighty angels, who are wife to know between good and evil.

O. And the woman faw that the tree was good for food; and that it was health to the eyes, and a tree to be defired as one by which knowledge was attained: and he took of its fruit, and she did eat, and the gave alfo to her husband with herself, and he did eat.

P. J. And the woman faw Samael the angel of death, and fhe was afraid: and the knew that the tree was good for food; and that it was falutary to the light of the eyes, and a tree to be defired for the acquifition of knowledge thereby and fhe took of its fruit, and did eat, and fhe gave alfo to her husband with her, and he did eat.

O. And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; then they fewed together for themselves fig-leaves, and made for themselves girdles.

P. J. And the eyes of them both were enlightened, and they knew that they were naked; for they were ftripped of the purple clothing, in which they had been created; and when they looked upon their parts of fhame, they fewed together for themselves the leaves of fig-trees, and made unto themselves girdles.

J. And they made to themselves robes.

O. And they heard the voice of the word of the Lord God, walking in the garden in the eve of the day; and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the prefence of the Lord God, in the midst of a tree of the garden.

0. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and faid unto him, Where art thou?

P. J. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and faid unto him: Is not the whole world which I have created open before me, the darkness as the light? and how couldeft thou think in thy heart to lie hid from me? do not I fee the place in which thou art hidden? and where are thofe precepts which I injoined thee?

J. And the word of the Lord God called unto Adam, and faid unto him: Behold, the world which I have created is laid open before me: darkness and light are open before me, and how didft thou expect the place, in the midst of which thou art, not to be discovered before me? where is the commandment which I injoined thee?

0. And he faid: I heard in the garden the voice of thy word, and I was afraid, because I am naked, and I hid myself.

P. J. And he faid: I heard the voice of thy word in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and had tranfgreffed the commandments which thou injoinedít me, and I hid myfelf through shame.

0. And he faid: Who made known to thee that thou art naked? haft thou eaten of that tree whereof I commanded thee not to eat thereof? P. J. And he faid: Who told thee that thou waft naked? peradventure thou haft eaten of the fruit of that tree of which I injoined thee not to eat thereof.

0. And Adam faid: The woman, whom thou gaveft to be with me, fhe gave to me of the tree, and I did eat.

P. J. And Adam faid: The woman, whom thou gaveft to be with me, fhe gave me of the fruit of the tree, and I did eat.

0. And the Lord God faid unto the woman: Why haft thou done this? And the woman anfwered: The ferpent feduced me, and I did

P. J. And the Lord God faid unto the woman: Why haft thou done this? And the woman antwered: The ferpent beguiled me in his wifdom, and caufed me to err in his wickednets, and I did eat.

0. And the Lord God faid unto the ferpent: Because thou haft done this, curfed art thou above all cattle, and above every beaft of the field: upon thy belly fhalt thou go, and duft fhalt thou eat all the days of thy life.

P. J. And the Lord God brought them three unto judgment: and he faid unto the ferpent: Because thou haft done this, curfed art thou above all cattle, and above every beast of the field: upon thy belly fhalt thou go, and thy feet fhall be fhortened, and thou fhalt caft thy fkin once in feven years, and deadly poifon fhall be in thy mouth, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.

O. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between

P. J. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and be tween the feed of thy fon and the feed of her fons. And it thall be when. the fons of the woman fhall keep the precepts of the law, they fhall prepare to fmite thee on thy head: but when they thall forfake the precepts of the law, then thou fhalt be in readinets to bite them on their heel. Yet they fhall have a remedy, but thou shalt have no remedy: for they fhall apply a medicine to their heel, in the days of King Mefliah.

J. And it fhall be when the fons of the woman fhall attend to the law and perform the precepts thereof, they shall prepare to wound thee on thy head and fhall kill thee: but when the fons of the woman thall forfake the commandments of the law, and shall not perform the precepts thereof, thou shalt be in readiness and thalt bite them upon their heel, and fhalt afflict them with fickness. Nevertheless, there fhall be a remedy for the fons of the woman; but for thee, O Serpent, there fhall not be a remedy for they fhall provide a medicine for one another in the heel, in the end of the heel of days, in the days of King Mellah.

0. Unto the woman he faid: I will heavily multiply thy forrow and thy conception: in forrow fhalt thou bear children: and towards thy husband shall be thy defire, and he fhall rule over thee.

P. J. To the woman he faid: I will furely multiply thy affliction by the blood of + virginity and thy conception: in forrow halt thou bring forth children: and towards thy hufband fhall be thy defire: and he shall be ruler over thee both for purification and for fin.

0. And unto Adam, he said: Because that thou haft hearkened unto the word of thy wife, and haft eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, faying, Thou shalt not eat of it: curfed is the ground on thy ac count with toil fhalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

P.J. And unto Adam, he said: Because thou haft hearkened to the word of thy wife, and haft eaten of the fruit of the tree of which 1 commanded thee, faying, Thou shalt not eat of it: curfed is the earth in that it did not point out to thee thy fault: with toil fhalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

0. Thorns alfo and thiftles fhall it caufe to fpring up unto thee; and thou fhall eat the herb of the field.

P. J. Thorns alfo and thiftles fhall it caufe to fpring up and bear on thy account; and thou fhalt eat the grafs which is on the face of the field. Adam answered and faid, I beseech thee by the mercies that proceed from before thee, O Lord! that we be not reckoned as the cattle, that we fhould eat the grass which is on the face of the field, let us arife now, and let us toil with the labor of our hands; and let us eat food of the food of the earth; and thus let there be now a diftinction in thy fight between the fons of men and the fons of cattle.

faid, I beseech thee, by the mercies that proceed from before thee, O Lord, let us not be esteemed before thee as the beasts, that we should eat the grafs which is on the face of the field : let us arise now, and let us toil with the labors of our hands, and let us eat for food of the fruits of the earth; and in this manner let there be a diftinction before thee between the fons of men and between the beafts.

19.

O. In the sweat of thy face fhalt thou eat bread, until that thou return unto the earth from whence thou waft created; for duft thou art, and unto duft fhalt thou return.

P. J. By the toil of the palm of thy hand thou fhalt eat food, until that thou return unto the duft from whence thou waft created; for duft thou art, and unto duft shalt thou return for out of the dust thou art to be raised, to give judgment and account of every thing that thou hait done, in the day of the great judgment.

0. And Adam called the name of his wife Chavah, because she was the mother of all the fons of men.

P. J. And Adam called the name of his wife Chavah, because she was the mother of all the fons of men.

0. And the Lord God made for Adam, and for his wife, clothes of glory upon the fkin of their flesh, and clothed them.

P. J. And the Lord God made unto Adam, and unto his wife, clothes of glory of the fkin of the ferpent that he had caft from him: upon the fkin of their flesh in the ftead of their beauty which they had put off from them; and he clothed them.

0. And the Lord God said: Behold, man is "alone in his world, able to know good and evil; and now that he may not put forth his hand and take alfo of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.

P.J. And the Lord God faid to the angels who miniftered before him : Behold, the man is alone in the earth, even as I am alone in the lofty heavens and it fhall come to país, that there fhall arife from him those who well know how to diftinguith between good and evil: if he had kept the commandments I enjoined him, he would have lived and have been eftablished as the tree of life for ever. But now, because he hath not ob¬ ferved what I commanded him, let us make a decree against him, and let us caft him out of the garden of Eden, before that he stretch forth his hand, and take of the fruit of the tree of life; fince, behold, if he eat of it, he hall live and be eftablifhed for ever.
