EXPLANATION of the Causes of Variation between Expenditure and Grant.

A.–Of the 4091. ls. 11d. saved, sum of 1001. included in the Grant of 16,8531. as a “ Contribution to the Land Revenues in respect of Fees and Poundage of Receivers, &c.," was unexpended. The balance of 3091. 18. 11d. is mainly the result of changes in the staff following the retirement from the public service of Mr. A. M. Hart, who acted as Clerk in charge of Accounts.

B.— The excess of 81. 168. 7d. is due to the provision of uniforms for the Messengers of the Department.

D, E and F.-All show a substantial saving It is impracticable to form any reliable estimate as to the amount of litigation and legal investigation that may arise and have to be made in any particular year.

EXTRA REMUNERATION.

The Superintendent of, and the First Class Clerk in, the Quit Rent Office, Dublin, also receive allowances of 701. and 35l. per annum respectively out of the Vote for the Board of Trade.

Members of the Permanent Staff, including Abstractors, were paid for overtime sums amounting to 3041. 158. 8d. Of this amount the following members received sums amounting to 25l. and upwards, viz. : H. C. Eyles (Clerk, First Class)
