Opinions of the Press.

This is really an interesting book, and one that supplies a want much felt in the sporting world. The only authority upon the subject hitherto was Colonel Hawker's book, published in 1824, which, valuable in other points, is yet meagre in the extreme upon the subject of wild-fowl. . . . Mr. Folkard gives full details upon the whole subject... and has interspersed his work with a number of amusing anecdotes of his experience.'

Morning Post.

Turning over the leaves of this volume is like opening a new page of stirring history adorned with a brilliant pen. The historical portions of the work are in no way inferior to the writings of some of the greatest authors of the day; and the anecdotes are told with a brilliancy and liveliness of humour that cannot be excelled. . . . It ranks among those of the highest class of sporting literature, and will occupy a prominent position in the libraries of science and natural history.'

The Farmer's Magazine.

In a single page the author frequently contrives to convey as much intelligent and intelligible matter as more diffuse writers painfully include in a chapter.'-Athenæum.

'The Wild-fowler will be read by the people of every class, with interest, instruction, and delight.... Some of the chapters, for historical information and interesting detail, burst out upon the reader with all the liveliness and rapture of a Macaulay.... We cordially and faithfully recommend "The Wild-fowler," as a work fitting for the drawing-room table of every house in the land, as it is for the library of every sportsman, naturalist, and general reader throughout the world.'-Sporting Review (for October).

'Were it not for the title, we might look upon it as a book of natural history worthy the pen of Buffon or Gilbert White.... The first thing that will strike the reader is the fulness of the matter, the vividness of the language, the colour and imagery of the style, the flow of reflection that never pauses, never diminishes, the happily expressed thoughts, the rich intermixture of wisdom, fancy, ingenuity, and innate knowledge of the subject. The highest historical composition, blended with lively anecdote and luminous narrative.'-Sporting Review (for November).

'The whole is interspersed with clever anecdotes, practical advice, and sage counsel, that render the volume as useful as it is interesting. The author writes with great spirit and great power... his research is profound, his style always original, easy, distinct, glowing, elevated and dignified.... The work is beautifully got up, both as to literary matter, type, paper, binding, and illustrations.-The Review, the Country Gentleman's Journal.

'Enthusiasm peeps out in almost every page. From first to last, the instructive is interspersed with the amusing, in the shape of anecdotes of curious adventures and narrow escapes both by sea and land..... We earnestly recommend those who take an interest in the subject, at once to possess the work itself, and make themselves acquainted with its valuable contents.'-Bell's Life.

To its pro

'Considered on its own merits, it is magnificent indeed. duction, great care, taste, and enthusiasm has been brought; and the author will reap a reward in the pleasure and approbation of all among the gentry of England.'-Sunday Times.

Mr. Folkard has given the public, in this handsome volume, the result of his own experience in so agreeable a style, that many who have neither opportunity nor inclination to avail themselves of the information it contains will read it for the amount of curious and novel instruction they may gather from it. . . . A better written or more amusing book on a sporting subject has not appeared for some time.'-Shipping Gazette.

'The anecdotes of the punting cobbler who got so bewildered by the "whe-oh! whe-ow!" of the widgeon, that he shot a learned brother of the craft by mistake; and the woes of Ted Steele, when he got peppered with peas by the envious shore gunners, are told in his happiest vein. . . . Several of the engravings are from drawings by the author; of these "Anxious Moments," "Wild-swan Shooting by Moonlight," and "The Day for Ducks," are our favourites; and "Sambo's First Lesson in the Fens," from "Ansdell's easel," quite atones for all.'
