DISSERTATION

ON THE

LIFE AND WRITINGS

OF

HOMER.

ALTHOUGH the writings of Homer have attained an unequalled degree of celebrity, the particulars of his life are still involved in the most inexplicable obscurity. His parentage and condition arc, alike, unknown-at least it is impossible to decide, with any degree of certainty, concerning them; even the name of the city which gave him birth, is not yet, and, in all probability, never will be ascer tained.

This is owing, in part, to the remote age in which he lived; to his own unconquerable modesty, that made him neglect to mention these circuin stances in any of his works, and perhaps to the number of poets of the same name, no less than sight Homers having flourished in Greece.
