Thou from primeval nothingness didst call Nought! But the effluence of Thy light
Pervading worlds, hath reach'd my bosom Eternity had its foundation ;-all
too; Sprong forth from Thee :-of light, joy, Yes! in my spirit doth Thy spirit shine, harmony,
As shines the sun-beam in a drop of dew. Sole origin :--all life, all beauty Thine. Nought! but I live, and on hope's pinions fiy Thy word created all, and doth create ; Eager towards Thy presence; for in Thee Thy splendor tills all space with rays divine; I live, and breathe, and dwell; aspiring high, Thou art, and wast, and shalt be! Glorious ! Even to the throne of Thy divinity: Great!
I am O God! and surely Thou must be! Light-giving, life-sustaining Potentate !
Thou art ! directing, guiding all, Thou art ! Thy chains the unmeasured universe sur- Direct my understanding then to Thee ; round:
Control my spirit, guide my wandering Upheld by Thee, by Thee inspir'd with heart; breath!
Though but an atom 'midst immensity : Thou the beginning with the end hast bound, Still I am something, fashion'd by Thy hand! And beautifully mingled life and death! I hold a middle rank 'twixt heaven and earth, As sparks mount upwards from the fiery On the last verge of mortal being stand, blaze,
Close to the realms where angels have their So sons are born, so worlds spring forth birth, from Thee;
Just on the boundaries of the spirit-land. And as the spangles in the sunny rays Shine round the silver snow, the pageantry The chain of being is complete in me; Of heaven's bright army glitters in Thy in me is matter's last gradation lost, praise,
And the next step is spirit-Deity!
I can command the lightning, and am dust! A million torches lighted by thy hand A monarch, and a slave; a worm, a god ! Wander unwearied through the blue abyss : Whence came I here, and how? so marThey own Thy power, accomplish thy com- vellously mand,
Constructed and conceived ? unknown! All gay with life, all eloquent with bliss. this clod What shall we call them ? Piles of crystal | Lives surely through some higher energy; light
For from itself alone it could not be ! A glorious company of golden streamsLamps of celestial ether burning bright- Creator, yes ! Thy wisdom and Thy word Suns lighting systems with their joyous Created me! thou source of life and good! beams?
Thou Spirit of my spirit, and my Lord! But Thou to these art as the noon to night. Thy light, Thy love, in their bright plenitude
Filled me with an immortal soul, tu spring Yes! as a drop of water in the sea,
Over the abyss of death, and bade it wear All this magnificence in Thee is lost- The garments of eternal day, and wing What are ten thousand worlds compared to Its heavenly flight beyond this little sphere, Thee?
Even to its source-to Thee its Author And what am I then?' Heaven's unnum. there.

Is glorious as the morning's birth.

THE OMNIPOTENT GOD.
Howl winds of night, your force combine ;
Without his high behest,
Disturb the sparrow's nest.
ALMIGHTY King, who sit'st above,
And clad in robes of matchless state,
Thou, thou, alone art truly great.
His voice sublime is heard afar,
In distant peals it dies;
And sweeps the howling skies.
